Dense clouds passed by in the sky, showing a gloomy play of colors of different shades of gray and perfectly reflecting the mood in Lee Heeseung.
Dreary and sad.
A depressing feeling that lay heavy on his chest. Gravity seemed to be especially strong today, as Ethan had the impression that everything was trying to push him to the ground. He felt powerless and his eyes hurt. So did his butt, which he had been sitting on that hard bench seat of the bleachers for what felt like an eternity.
The large soccer field stretched out in front of him and sporadically the last students could be seen packing up their equipment after practice to return to the locker room.
For the tenth time, Ethan's cell phone vibrated in his pocket, but just like the times before, he didn't answer it. Because he knew there could only be one person who was trying so persistently to reach him.
But he wouldn't.
Above all: he couldn't.
Tears still rolled down his cheeks and silently found their way to the floor. He was aware that all the crying couldn't get him anywhere, but he also knew that he didn't have the strength to fight it.
Not anymore.
The young student hadn't been able to concentrate on the lecture once today, not a word of the lecturer had gotten through to him and his notes looked very sloppy for once.
He didn't feel like doing anything.
Getting up had been difficult for him. He no longer dreamed of anything but the constant fights and the subsequent breakup. It would take him weeks, if not months, to forget his ex-boyfriend's harsh words. He would need time to be able to process them and move on from his two-year relationship with Lay. It felt awful. To know that you had spent such a long time with someone, how much you had loved them and in some cases still did. Because Ethan couldn't turn off his feelings that easily, no matter how much Lay had hurt him.
And in the present moment, here on these bleachers, it felt like he could never get over it.
His friends Joshua and Namjoon had also been extra gentle with him after they learned of the breakup. It hadn't escaped his notice. They spoke quietly, didn't joke around, and didn't ask about his notes today. Likewise, he had been grateful that they spared themselves the endless questions about why and that they didn't ask what had happened between them.
He would tell them eventually, when he was ready.
He knew they had already seen it in his eyes that something was wrong.
The other glow, especially in Ethan, had been lost for several weeks.
Lay had always been a rather jealous type, but so far Ethan had always found it sweet. Only lately, especially after that pool incident, his jealousy had gone through the roof. At least that's how it seemed to Ethan.
