AVELINA
I sat next to Cassio in the private room booked for me when he spoke, "Hey, I am sorry for whatever you are going through."
I didn't even look his way and didn't respond when he cleared his throat, "I know no woman deserves this and I am really really sorry that-"
I whispered, "Please stop."
He turned his knees towards me, "Avelina-"
With tears glossing my eyes, I looked at him, my voice never coming out more than just a whisper, "A non-helping witness is worse than the abuser itself."
He sighed, "Look, obviously it hurts me seeing you like this and I did what I could do today. He is the Capo and no matter what, he is stronger. I can't just stand up in front of him and fight-"
"Then I don't need your apologies. Thank you."
His shoulders slumped and got quiet when I immediately felt guilty. He just saved my life and this was how I was repaying him? The least I could do was say a thank you.
He massaged his forehead when I cleared my throat, "Thank you."
He shook his head, "I promise I will make sure days get better for you."
I looked at him when some hope rekindled within my heart seeing it's shine in his eyes but that too, died too soon because I was immediately reminded of this world, "Don't make promises that you can't fulfil."
He smiled at me, "I promised myself that I wouldn't let him even touch you or hit you while I am in vicinity and I think I did live up to that today."
A small smile tugged my lips when I lowered my gaze to my lap and nodded. When Alessio came home, Cassio was nowhere in sight and only when we started fighting and hitting, did he come and save me. The doctors had treated me and upon my insistence, we were sitting here for a few more minutes because I didn't want to go home again. It felt suicidal.
Cassio looked at me, "Just give him time."
I cut my gaze to him, "I'm sorry but that isn't my place to deal with. Such cases need to go to psychiatrists, the wife is not the one the world should slaughter."
He sighed for the umpteenth time, "Sweetheart, I get you but-"
"Alessio would kill you for calling me that."
"No, he wouldn't."
"What guarantee do you have?"
"The same guarantee that is making me sit here even after your medical is taken care of."
I squinted my eyes at him, "You are constantly moving your knees and are close to shitting yourself. What are you talking about?"
He had a look on his face which showed that I had just smacked the reality back at him when he squinted his eyes like a squirrel at me, "He he he, fonny."
I chuckled, amazed that it had been ages since I did that when Cassio also laughed. He rubbed his hands together and placed both of his elbows on his knees as he addressed me, "I agree with you, one hundred percent. That stupid man made you the punching bag and I agree whole heartedly with you that you didn't deserve this. You don't deserve to clean up some other's mess and this is not at all your job to take care of a person-"
"Mentally deranged."
"Yeah, don't let him hear you say that."
"I did."
"What?"
"I did say it to his face. That he is a mentally deranged person."
HIS MOUTH OPENED AS HE STARED AT ME, "Whatttttt? Whennnnn?"
