ALESSIO
I stood outside the hospital doors when my phone rang. It was Cassio.
I picked it up, "Yes?"
"I go for not even a whole month and you fucking shot your father?"
"He was provoking me."
"Not the first time this has happened in the mafia. What will you do when your enemies do? You can't start killing them all at once. Even you know what it will result in."
"Shut up Cassio, just shut up. I know I did wrong-"
"No, Alessio. Listen to me."
I shut my mouth when he spoke, "You need a break. Step down from your post-"
"Are you the fucking traitor wanting the position?"
Something dropped from his end when there was some sort of finality and hurt in his voice, "You know what? I quit." My heart deadly stopped and my eyes widened, my blood rushing inside my body roaring for everything he was saying to be a fucking lie when he continued, "You fucking heard it right. I quit because I can't daily deal with this shit of yours. I have been with you since so long, have trusted you and worked for you, have kept your secrets and managed to do those things for you that you wouldn't dare tell anyone because of danger of information getting leaked. And trust me when I say that I have kept your secrets. Even while I am talking to you, my boyfriend is out getting takeout for us. Yes, he is my boyfriend, yes, we both are together but he is new, he hasn't gained my trust yet and hence? I wouldn't ever talk about mafia shit in front of him. I am not even in the room since I don't trust him for spying on me. It doesn't matter that I don't see a future with him, what matters is Omerta and I have always respected it and kept it fucking close to my heart. But your problem is that-"
"I don't trust people."
"Which is understandable, Alessio. Totally understandable. But when things start getting to the point that you are shooting your own father who always has your back, is right beside you and was basically the one to find whereabouts for who killed your first wife and arranged a whole battalion to end them while you wept in loss....." my heart clenched when he took in a breath, "he was that same father.
When matters get to the point that you are hitting your wife, doubting me and not even going easy on your ownself? You need help. You need serious help and you need to relax and let go of some things and get back on track. This will ruin you further, don't you realize? Your father is one of the reasons many people don't straight up come outside your house and decide to blow it apart to fucking pieces. Because of our alliance with your dad's mafia. You have to understand, he is not only a mafia boss, he is your father, someone's husband, someone's loving grandfather. Alessio, snap out of it. What the fuck is disturbing you so much for you to go this mental crazy? I know you, I have been working with you, this is not you. This fucking isn't you. Something is going on that you aren't telling."
I was silent. I didn't say anything and couldn't say anything when my mother emerged out of the doors. She looked at me, made her lips into a thin line, turned her head and walked away.
I sighed and started walking the other way when Cassio whispered, "Alessio?"
I sounded defeated, "What?"
"What is disturbing you?"
"Nothing."
"No, there is something, tell me."
"I'm fine."
"Are you?"
There was silence when I chose not to answer. It stretched on for minutes when I sat in one of the chairs at the secluded end and hung my head low and whispered back, "Today was the day Julie and I got married. Exactly this date."
