AVELINA

The house was eerily silent as I walked through it. Alessio was gone since five days now, and I wasn't enjoying one bit of it. Everything fell so silent around us, even the birds were no longer chirping. Cassio was mostly busy in mafia life, James was usually more into playing games and...well, that's it. There was no commotion in the house anymore. His office was locked, his warehouse was empty and every trace of his was wiped away.

My heart thrummed in my chest, feeling sad all of a sudden, because I knew that Alessio was trying to change. I could see it. He would no longer talk rudely with me, he would not punish me, wouldn't make fun of me or treat me badly. In the last few months that he was here, he would always be looking out for me, making sure I was okay, had proper clothes and everything that I needed. When I was sick, he would specially stand in the kitchen and make soup for me.

He would ask permission before anything, whether it be even visiting a shop. Until and unless, there wasn't a 'yes' from me, he never proceeded. He slept closer to me in bed and made sure I was warm and cozy in the night. Occasionally, I would wake up in the night for a glass of water and would find a mesh of pillows and a soft mattress on the floor beside my bed, in case I fell and didn't hurt myself.

He would put food in the plate for me and make sure that I ate all of it. He signed me into therapy sessions to help me let go of the past. And yet...he never looked me in the eye. Ever.

My heart craved to see the stormy grey of his eyes, but Alessio never looked up at me. And the rare occasions that he did? Was when he was wearing sunglasses. Other than that? No matter how much I craved and wanted to catch a glimpse of his eyes? He never looked at me.

I started walking up the steps when uneasiness crawled and clamped around my heart. Usually with Alessio around, I always felt safe in his large estate. I knew that if something was to happen? He would come and save me, quickly. But now, since he wasn't home, every night was a dreadful nightmare for me. I would double lock the doors and the windows, I would keep a gun under my pillow and a knife under Alessio's. I would close the curtains till there was darkness everywhere and then get into bed.

With Alessio here, I just had to jump in my nightgown and straight into bed. He did the rest. His presence, enough to make me feel safe and sound.

The walls around the house gave me the chills and the creeps with Alessio not being here. I stopped cooking food for him, ironing his favourite shirts for him or arranging his cabinets. There was nothing to arrange.

I entered our room and closed the door, locking it a million times when I scanned the whole room to make sure that no one was here. I checked every corner, every room, behind the curtains, inside the cabinets, under the bed, and when I was sure that I was alone was when I let in a bit of air within my lungs.

I opened his side desk to see it stark empty. Nothing inside here anymore. I opened his cabinets to see some of his suits still here while he took the rest. They were already ironed and didn't need more ironing. Not that I would have done it. These coats still had his smell and I wanted that. He left behind many of his belongings which was all that was left of his.

My hands curled around his suit coat when I took it off its hanger. Pushing my nose inside, I inhaled his scent when calmness radiated through within me, instantly calming me down. I clutched his coat closer to my chest and closed his cabinet, getting back into bed. Making sure I had the gun and the knives, I made sure that the doors were locked, the windows were clicked shut and there was no place left unsupervised by me, when I got back in bed.
