FIVE MONTHS LATER
CASSIO
Jamie was fast asleep when I was going over the shipment details. There was a knock on the living room door when I looked up in time to see Avelina come inside.
"Hey."
She smiled back, "Hey. Where is Jamie?"
"Sleeping with Gio. They both were out for shopping today, got tired, slept."
"Ooooo. What did they get?"
"Jamie got himself the whole grocery shop and half of the clothing store. Gio didn't stop him and to make sure that I didn't feel bad for not getting anything, he got me handcuffs and a vibrator." I looked up at her with a deadpan expression, "Seriously, why did I even fall for him?"
She laughed and started to make her way towards me, "You love it."
A sigh escaped my lips when I concentrated back on the files, "No doubt about that."
She sat next to me and took the papers out of my hand, inspecting them as she spoke, "I met with the lawyer handling the case for the 'attempted raid' at us. Baxter. He was quite sure he had us by our throats and offered us a settlement at the deposition. Again."
"Then?"
She flipped the page and kept answering, "I directly went to the DA's office."
My eyes practically bulged out of my sockets, "YOU DID WHATTTTTT?"
"And then I went straight to Judge Hopkin's chambers."
"Avelina, are you nuts? Have you lost your mind?"
She looked at me and sighed, "We won the case."
THAT shut me up when I blinked, "How?"
"They were trailing us without authorization. I asked Jenson to hack into the company's accounts and get us data for all the 'allowed trailing.' Jenson couldn't get there in time so he made a fake report which showed how neither the government, nor the office chambers allowed them to trail us. I showed it to Baxter before the trial could start in court."
"So basically you played the biggest bluff of your entire life which could have gone horribly wrong?"
"Yes."
"And he bought it?"
"Oh, he not only bought it, he was forced to apologize in front of the jury and judge."
"So you did go to court."
"We ran out of time before he could answer. Aww, oops, me late? How probable could that be? Anywayssss, how u doin?"
"That still doesn't explain how you won the case based on only this. What if he was actually prepared?"
She sighed, "I dug deeper into his clients that he took since the day he came into law practice. Third client seemed shady, I tracked him down, re-studied the entire case and found how Baxter had been his lawyer and had tried burying the evidence of fraud and won the case, favouring the guilty. I followed all trails and got tremendous amount of data that could have easily landed three people in jail. Collected all evidence and went to Baxter, swiping his lawyer smug smirk right off his face, threatening him with this."
"So why didn't you land all three in jail?"
"What, are you stupid? My method to retrieve that data was illegal."
