Chapter 23

People were way more mindful of their behavior around Alden following the incident but Alden quickly forgot about them too focused on Amauri's happy smile. He was ecstatic at the idea of having a ball for himself and of being with his family for his birthday. He danced with his mommy ten times without getting tired at all and was ready to dance again when someone came up to ask for a dance with Amauri. It was a noble woman who asked for a dance in the name of her daughter and Amauri was ready to deny when his mommy accepted for him. Amauri seemed betrayed but Alden really needed a break and he wanted Amauri to make friends his age.

He was ready to walk to the side when another hand got extended towards Alden. The latter looked up and saw Tyon staring at him. For some reason Alden couldn't look him in the eyes after what had happened and just signed before accepting. Tyon gently pulled Alden to the center of the dance floor before pulling him towards him. Seeing them together, Amauri was boiling but he couldn't say anything and just danced with a girl he didn't care about at all.

Alden was tired and Tyon felt it. He pulled Alden even closer and lifted him while making Alden scream in surprise:

"What are you doing?

-You seemed tired. Do I have to stop?"

Alden looked away. He was half touched and half irritated by him always knowing what he felt.

"It's okay."

Of course everyone stopped dancing to stare at them and seeing that, Alden remembered what he wanted to talk about at the beginning of the ball. He still didn't look at Tyon and said:

"Why did you tell everyone we would get married?

-Won't we?"

Alden was too tired to be even surprised.

"We didn't say we would. We said we were Amauri's parents but we never talked about being a couple.

-I am sorry.

-It's okay. It was a misunderstanding.

-What do you want me to do?

-Nothing. It's okay."

Tyon's heart jumped:

"Are we really going to get married?

-I don't know. Let me think about it.

-You look pale. Do you want to sit down for a bit?

-No."

Alden felt weirdly comfortable in Tyon's arms and just let his head fall on his shoulder. Tyon's every muscle tensed up lost between freezing and screaming his lungs out. Alden on the other hand was resting his eyes while they were still dancing slowly. The music stopped but Tyon continued dancing, not letting go of Alden. He wanted to stay this way for hours but Amauri had finally gotten rid of that girl and rushed to get his mommy back from his father. Of course Tyon wasn't happy because as soon as Amauri arrived, Alden straightened up and asked Tyon to put him down. Once he was on the ground, he left with Amauri and danced with him again to make up for abandoning him before.

After hours of music, Tyon announced the cake and Amauri asked to be carried by his mommy while everyone was singing happy birthday. Tyon hugged his small family too and Alden lied against Tyon, his feet hurting him. Of course his little family immediately noticed something was wrong and they made someone bring a chair for Alden to sit on. He felt really uncomfortable being the only one sitting but his family was really stubborn in these moments.

Of course the first cake slice got handed to Alden and not to Amauri because both Amauri and Tyon wanted it that way. Alden tried to argue:

"But darling, it is your birthday. You should get the first slice.
