3rd POV

Pen was... different to all the other people in his grade.

Normally here's the part where someone would explain why that's a 'great thing' and 'it makes them unique' but it was the worst thing that could ever happen to him.

There was always something odd about him. Social cues from peers went unnoticed, and he'd get overwhelmed when certain things happened.

That's why when a friend of his suggested he could have autism, it didn't come as much of a surprise.

If anything, Pen was relieved. Having the ability to associate his symptoms with a name was liberating, and Pen felt like he could take on the world. He found a community of like minded people and they all got along like... well, people getting along.

Then his dad got a new job out of town, and he had to move. That meant a new school, new people, and, most notably, no more friends.

"What were our steps?" His best friend, Eraser, queried over the phone.

"Keep my head down low for the first days, try and find your friend, and don't go on a rant if someone starts to talk about skateboarding."

"You missed one." He could hear the smile in Eraser's voice as he spoke.

"Have fun." Pen replied, giving up on hiding his own smile.

"You'll be fine Pen, Snowball's willing to beat up anyone who bullies you."

"Uh, tell him I appreciate the sentiment, but I'd rather he'd not?"

A chuckle. "On it. Have an awesome day, dude."

"Thanks, you too."

Pen only sighed as he hung up, patiently waiting for his mum to stop the car.

"Glad to hear Eraser's looking out for you, honey."

"Me too, he's really nice."

"I'm aware. Make sure to have fun today, okay?"

"I will."

As if on cue, they stopped outside the school. The gates were thrown open as hundreds of students flocked in. Pen gulped at the sight.

"I know it's all new, but you're my brave boy, and I know you can handle it, okay?"

He nodded, the words caught in his throat. His mother only sighed and kissed his cheek.

"Don't stress about it sweetheart, just have fun!"

He nodded again, gripping the straps of his bag as he stepped out of the car. Meekly, he waved goodbye and stepped into the crowd.

A bronze haired boy tapped his foot on the floor as he leaned back on a blue locker. He was meant to be meeting with a friend of a friend, but he couldn't seem to find him anywhere.

"Coiny!" Cried a girl in red. (A/N hahah)

The boy turned at the mention of his name, a smile displaying his recognition of the student.
