Chapter 7: Love for a Child

A few months had passed and Sarah's pregnancy was progressing further but as it did so she worried about people finding out. Sarah went to Malcolm Chace who was now Warden of Arkham and requested maternity leave, luckily Arkham had special accommodations for any kind of medical leave due to Wayne Foundation's involvement with the asylum. Sarah's maternity leave was going to be for the next 9 months even though she was already 3 months in so this gave her sometime to spend with her baby before going back to work.

Just as Sarah's maternity leave crept around the corner she made certain that her patients would be in good hands. Sarah had 4 patients under her care; her father the Joker, Edward Nygma A. K. A. The Riddler, Jervis Tetch A. K. A. The Mad Hatter, and a young girl around Sarah's age named Lyla Carnell. She was a similar case to Sarah, she was admitted as a child for killing her older brother and since her admittance wasn't exactly legal she was kept inside the facility hidden for years until Malcolm took over as Warden. Lyla had been kept in a cell in the basement of the asylum so he gave her a session. It turned out that Lyla had become mute due to her time alone in the basement so Malcolm had Sarah help her regain her ability to speak but she still preferred to keep quiet except around Sarah. Lyla often called Sarah her only friend and did in fact trust Sarah more than anyone else.

Sarah's substitutes for her leave was going to be Dr. Natalie Wright and Dr. Malcolm Chace two close friends of Sarah's. Natalie would be looking after Edward and Jervis, while Malcolm would look after Joker and Lyla. Sarah would've trusted Natalie but she often worked with less severe cases and since she was also Daniel's psychiatrist Sarah felt that she would do nicely with Edward and Jervis wasn't very hard to handle, honestly all Sarah had to do was treat him like she cared and he became a kitten. Malcolm had already known both of them and he was the only other person that Joker would actually open up to, Lyla however was a lot less trusting of Malcolm but Sarah knew that there was really no other choice.

Sarah's last day was spent in a session with Lyla. "So Lyla how are you feeling today?" Asked Sarah as she clicked the record button on the tape recorder.
"I feel much better now." Said Lyla as she smiled softly like she often did around Sarah.
"Yes, you mentioned in our last session that you were feeling remorseful about what happened to your brother. Did you feel guilty about killing him?" Asked Sarah as Lyla shook her head.
"No not that brother, I had two. Tommy my older brother and Lewis my little brother. I killed Tommy because he killed Lewis." Said Lyla as Sarah looked at her file.
"It says here that Lewis died due to an illness." Said Sarah as Lyla nodded.
"Rather than what would've happened if I didn't act!" Growled Lyla but then she took a breath. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to get angry but Tommy didn't like Lewis very much." Said Lyla as she sighed.
"It's alright, can you elaborate?" Asked Sarah as Lyla hummed a certain toon, it was the nursery rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel. Once she had started humming it Sarah knew that their session was going to be very hard to continue. Lyla would often hum the toon to express her displeasure with the question at hand so Sarah had to change the topic to get her to open back up. "I've noticed you really like that nursery rhyme, does it have any significance to you?" Asked Sarah as Lyla just kept humming so Sarah sighed. Suddenly Sarah noticed the time, their session was nearing its end. "Lyla there's something I need to tell you." Said Sarah as Lyla stopped humming and cocked her head to the side.
"What is it Doctor?" Asked Lyla as Sarah smiled a little.
"I'm pregnant and because of that I will be going on maternity leave for a while so I've arranged for Malcolm to be your psychiatrist while I'm away." Said Sarah as Lyla sunk into her shoulders.
"I don't like him, he scares me." Said Lyla as Sarah sighed.
"Would you rather I set you up with someone else?" Asked Sarah as Lyla shook her head.
"No! I don't want you to leave!" Said Lyla as she reached across Sarah's desk holding her hand.
"I'm sorry but being here puts my baby in danger." Said Sarah as truly she was more worried about her being here putting everyone else in danger. Due to the pregnancy Sarah was not going to be able to take her medication anymore because the medication would harm her child so she had started to hear a familiar voice in her head.
