Chapter 30: Inner Strength

Adam sat in the front seat of his father's car just begging that someone was going to come save him but he knew no one would. Suddenly he heard this voice in his head. It was a deep almost inhuman voice that enveloped his entire mind. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?" The voice barked at him as there was a static around the voice. Adam looked out the window and watched as his own reflection in the glass changed. In his reflection he saw a humanoid figure of bright white light with golden eyes and white pupils. "Is this what your mother died for?! Did she die just to let her only child be forced to live a life of misery?! You've known for your entire life that you were never going to be happy with the monster you call your father!" Shouted the voice as Adam shook his head and muttered under his breath.
"I don't know what to do..." He muttered as the voice sighed.
"Yes you do but you're scared of what you have to do. It's ok Adam, just go to sleep, I promise all will be well when you wake." Said the voice as Adam leaned his head against the window and closed his eyes.

What felt like a blink to him was actually moments of time he would not remember.

When he opened his eyes his father was unconscious and the front of the car was smashed into a large oak tree. Adam opened the car door and climbed out of the car. He looked down at his hands and noticed he was bleeding but he didn't feel any pain then suddenly he remembered when Victor stabbed his mom and she didn't even flinch. "I don't feel pain anymore?" Asked Adam as he smiled a little.
"Hey kid are you ok?!" Called someone from the road.
"Yeah I'm ok." Said Adam as he could feel his bones knitting back together but it wasn't painful it was kind of relaxing to him knowing that he was gonna be ok.
"Look I called 911, help is on the way." Said the man at the top of the hill as Adam climbed up to him. "Is that guy down there ok?" Asked the man as Adam glared down at the car.
"I hope he's dead!" Adam hissed as the man looked at him with shock.
"Jeez kid that's a bit harsh!" Said the man as Adam looked at him.
"I need to get out of here." Said Adam as he started to walk down the street.
"Maybe you should wait for the police to get here!" Called the man as Adam just started running down the road. The man tried to chase him but Adam was really fast, faster than he had ever been before.

Finally Adam reached the bridge that crossed over the river into Gotham but there was no safe way to run along the side of the bridge without getting hit so he opted to climb the bridge. Adam had never climbed a tree let alone a thousand foot tall bridge that had a very deadly drop at the bottom of it but even though that would've terrified any inexperienced person into turning back those frightening facts didn't stop Adam. He made his way up the beams bounding and leaping through them like he wasn't afraid that's only because he wasn't afraid, he was determined to find his mom. He refused to believe that Sarah was really dead. Once Adam reached the top of the bridge he looked out at the river watching the sunset along the horizon. "Wow..." Said Adam as he watched the sun set then he sighed and sat on the beam. Even though this had possibly been the worst day in Adam's entire life it was also the most alive he had ever felt. Adam made his way to the side of the bridge that faced Gotham and jumped down from the top of the bridge. He stood in the street for a moment but not even a second went by before he was hit by a car. The person paused and got out of the car.
"Oh my god please don't be dead!" The woman cried out as she wandered over and saw Adam sitting on the ground. He had a rib sticking out of his side, a badly broken bloodied nose, and his arm was broken but he snapped each bone back into place with his injuries healing instantly. Everyone stared in awe as Adam picked himself up off the ground and started running full force down an alleyway. He turned a corner and saw a fence then something in his instincts were telling him to make it over the fence so he jumped up on one foot and pushed off the brick wall with the other and grabbed the top of the fence throwing himself over. He rolled as he landed on the other side then kept running. He ran down the street and kept running until he saw the police. They looked at him and pointed to him.
"Hey kid!" Called an officer as Adam panicked and ran down another alley but sadly it was a dead end so he had to improvise and fast. He saw a fire escape and immediately jumped up and started climbing it. Adam made it up to the roof of the building and watched the police look around as they were utterly lost. Adam sighed and laid back on the building. He closed his eyes then suddenly heard footsteps walking on the gravel. He opened his eyes and saw a girl around his age was standing over him with a huge grin on her face.
"That was awesome! Can you do it again!" Asked the girl as Adam shot up.
"Um... Hi." Adam muttered as he stepped away from her but towards the edge of the roof.
"Hey watch the-!" Stated the girl as Adam stepped off the ledge and fell onto the fire escape. "Ledge." She stated as she looked over him and laughed. She held out her hand and Adam climbed back up on the roof. "You don't talk to a lot of girls, do you?" Asked the girl as her smile made Adam want to smile.
"No not really." He muttered as he scratched the back of his head.
"I'm Addison Pauler." Said the girl as she held out her hand and Adam took it.
"I'm Adam Ivory." Said Adam as Addison's eyes grew wide.
"Our names are so similar, do you know what this means!?" Asked Addison as she gripped his shoulders. Adam shook his head trying not to look at her like she was crazy. "We were totally destined to meet!" Said Addison as Adam smiled and made her let go of him.
"Ya know Addie I sure hope that's true because I really need to get going." Said Adam as he ran across the roof of the building and leaped onto the other building. Addison ran to the edge of the building with a bright smile on her face.
"You're crazy Adam!" She yelled as Adam smiled.
"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?!" Shouted Adam across the roof.
"It's an awesome thing!" Said Addison as she threw her arms up in the air. "Hey don't forget me ok!" Asked Addison as she smiled.
"I could never!" Said Adam as he smiled then he ran across the top of another building and Addison kept cheering him on.

Finally Adam met a building that was too far away so he climbed down the fire escape and decided to look around for some bearings. He walked out onto the sidewalk and looked around then smiled as he saw a sign for the Iceberg Lounge. Adam grinned and ran down the street until finding the building he had gone into when he first met Daniel. Adam went inside and went up to the penthouse of the building which was exactly where the lounge was. The elevator opened and Adam walked down a hallway to a pair of black double doors. He opened the doors and saw the place was empty. "Can I help you?" Asked the voice of Oswald Cobblepot as Adam quickly turned and saw Oswald sitting in a booth.
"I'm looking for Daniel." Said Adam as he stiffened. Oswald narrowed his eyes at him.
"Wait here one moment." Said Oswald as he stood and wandered off to his office. Adam stood there for a moment then noticed there was a photograph sitting on the table. Adam walked over and plucked it off the table. He looked at it and it was a picture of a young Sarah and Daniel sitting at a piano bench at this club. Adam looked around and noticed the piano in the corner on a small stage. Adam flipped over the page and saw there was writing on it. Daniel and his first girlfriend hopefully. Suddenly Oswald walked back in and noticed had the photo. "Why do you have that?!" Oswald snapped and took the photo from him.
"Who are you?" Asked Adam as Oswald slid the photo under some documents.
"My name is Oswald Cobblepot, I'm Daniel's father." Stated Oswald as he huffed. "I just called Daniel he'll be here to come get you soon, until then don't touch anything." Said Oswald as he sat back at the booth and continued his paperwork. Adam walked around the lounge and over to  the piano from the picture. He didn't touch it but he just looked at it. It was a black piano and the keys of the piano were color-reversed. "You like it?" Asked Oswald as Adam turned and nodded.
"I didn't know Daniel played the piano." Said Adam as Oswald walked over.
"He doesn't just play, he sings too." Said Oswald as he ran his hand across the top of the piano. "Daniel is very talented." Said Oswald as he had a small smile spread across his face just slightly.
"Who taught him how to play?" Asked Adam as Oswald happily sighed.
"I taught him the keys, the notes, and a few simple songs but he just soared off in his own direction and became absolutely incredible, I wish he'd come back and play a bit more but he's been so busy." Said Oswald as he sighed. "Speaking of things that keep Daniel busy, where's your mother?" Asked Oswald as Adam hung his head and sat at the piano bench.
"Mom is gone..." Adam muttered in a solemn tone as he started down at the keys of the piano.
"She's dead?" Asked Oswald in a bit of shock as Adam nodded and kinda started to tear up but the image of the man engulfed in white light with golden eyes sat next to him on the piano bench. The being out it's hand on Adam's leg and and looked at him.
"No tears Adam." Said the man as Adam nodded once more, sniffed, and wiped away his tears.

Adam sat there quietly then suddenly the doors in the lounge flew open and Joker ran through.
"Oh thank God!" He said as he ran over and hugged Adam tightly.
"Grandpa J, she's dead and it's all my fault! I could've stopped him but I didn't!" Adam cried out as Joker held onto Adam.
"Hey it's ok, I got you." Said Joker as he held onto the boy. As Joker and Daniel sat and talked with Adam about what happened to Sarah, Oswald stepped out of the room with Edward who had followed in with Daniel and the two went into Oswald's office.

Daniel was completely and utterly shocked by this news as he too thought Sarah was incapable of death but Joker just kinda laughed nervously. "No she can die but as long as we find her she'll come back." Said Joker as he stood and grinned.
"So what are we gonna do, Grandpa J?" Asked Adam as Joker put his hand on Adam's shoulder.
"We're going grave digging."
