Chapter 26: Killer

Joker sat on a rooftop with a man tied up dangling off the roof by an antenna that was hanging over the edge of the roof. The man kicked and screamed though his mouth was covered with duct tape. Joker sat there for a while until he got bored and cut the rope but suddenly a black blur flew by and caught the man before he fell too far towards the busy street below. Joker leaned over the edge of the building and saw the man was safely returned to the ground then he was being stared at by Batman from the ground. Joker was startled by the sudden gripping of the batclaw on the edge of the roof so he jumped back. Batman then just as quickly hopped over the ledge. "Hey handsome!" Said Joker with a grin as Bruce just looked at him.
"I assume you wanted my attention." Stated Bruce firmly as Joker stood and brushed himself off.
"Yeah but not for me." Said Joker as Bruce seemed more intrigued now. "It's Adam, he's back in Gotham and he's got the same disease Sarah did as a kid so we were all hoping you would be wanting to join us in saving the kid." Said Joker as Bruce smiled softly.
"Of course! I would love to help but I wasn't much use when Sarah was dying how could I possibly be of any use now?" Asked Bruce as he frowned and actually looked sad.
"Because you wouldn't be working off of nothing! Sarah has already been cured and other people have been using her blood to do incredible things why can't you?" Asked Joker as he put his hands on Bruce's chest rubbing his hands on the bat symbol on his chest. " I think it's safe to say I missed you." Said Joker as he bit his lip a little. Bruce placed his hands on the sides of Joker's face and kissed him but stopped.
"Tell me one thing, did Sarah break out of Arkham?" Asked Bruce as Joker sighed.
"No I broke her out but it was because she was being tortured so I had no other choice. Abigail Dupont was experimenting on her." Said Joker as he sighed. "She was abusing our little girl's beautiful gift, so I had to do something." Said Joker as Bruce sighed holding the sides of his face. They stood there for a moment holding each other then Bruce kissed Joker's forehead and sighed holding Joker against his chest.
"I missed you." He said softly which completely took the wind out of Joker's sails because Bruce wasn't usually one for the sentiments especially with him so he must've really missed being with him.
"You know sometimes I forget just how much you love me." Said Joker as he started tearing up as he rubbed his hand against the bat symbol on Bruce's chest.
"Every time I have to throw you into a cell at Arkham, I want to say I'm sorry but if I show any weakness to this city especially with you, I would lose everything." Said Bruce as his grip became tighter. "I wish we didn't have to be this way, I wish there was just some way, anyway the two of us could just be together with no consequences or repercussions, just us living in bliss." Said Bruce as Joker laid his head on Bruce's chest and sighed.
"That's a beautiful world Bats but it just can't be not with the world we created before there was an us." Said Joker as the two men just held each other for a moment enjoying the embrace that they didn't often have with each other. They just listened to each other's breathing like the sounds of the city just ceased to be and all that was left in the world was the two of them and only them. Finally something broke their beautiful trance, Alfred chimed in over the comms in Bruce's suit.
"Master Bruce-"
"Not now Alfred." Said Bruce firmly.
"But Sir it's important." Said Alfred as Bruce huffed.
"What?!" He barked as Alfred sighed.
"It's Sarah she's here with your grandson." Said Alfred as Bruce's annoyed demeanor changed to that of something softer and Joker could tell that what he wasn't hearing made Bruce happy.
"I'll be right there." Said Bruce firmly but with a small hidden smile in his eyes.

Bruce arrived in the Batcave with Joker walking next to him when he saw Sarah for the first time since before she was sent to Arkham and everything he was going to say to her was gone, he finally realized how truly horrible things had turned out for her. Sarah stood there talking with Alfred and Dick who seemed just as horrified by her appearance. "Why didn't you tell me things are this bad?!" Bruce barked turning to Joker.
"You're freaking out over nothing she's fine!" Said Joker as Bruce stared at him looking very upset. "Ok she's not fine but she's better than she used to be!" Said Joker as Bruce rolled his eyes.
"How could she possibly be any better in this condition!?" Barked Bruce as Joker sighed.
"Well Iris doesn't take over my mind anymore so that's a plus... By condition I assume you mean my complexion right?" Asked Sarah as Bruce sighed.
"The last time you looked like this you were dying, I'm just worried." Said Bruce as Sarah sighed.
"Well I'm not gonna die, not yet anyways but to be honest with my luck I'm never gonna die I used to think that was a curse but now that I have Adam back it feels a lot more like a gift." Said Sarah as she smiled.
"So where is he?" Asked Bruce as Sarah sighed.
"He's in that.... room. Barbara's taking his vitals." Said Sarah as Bruce nodded.
"Do you think he would be comfortable seeing me in the suit or should I change?" Asked Bruce as Sarah smiled.
"Maybe take off the cowl but other than that I think he'd be ok meeting you this way, after all it's how I met you." Said Sarah as Bruce grinned and took off the cowl.
"That's more true than you know." Said Bruce as he walked past her and went into the room that Sarah had spent a lot of time in as a kid due to her special illness. Joker grinned at Bruce's comment as Sarah looked at him.
"Remind me to tell you that story." Said Joker with a grin as Sarah looked at him confused.

Sarah and Joker followed Bruce into a small room where Tim was taking blood samples from Adam but Adam looked upset. "Hey what's wrong?" Asked Sarah as she shoved past Bruce and Joker and sat next to him.
"I don't know this all just seems a little too good to be true..." Said Adam as he sighed.
"Why is that?" Asked Sarah as Adam lowered his head.
"Well for as long as I can remember I was continuously told that I was just gonna die and there was nothing medicine could do for me so I don't know I just feel like I'm gonna wake up in my hospital room all alone again." Said Adam as Tim took the needle out of Adam's arm.
"I promise that'll never be your life again. Your father had no idea what he was getting into when he took you. I knew this was going to happen since the day you were born." Said Sarah as Adam looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell him?" Asked Adam as Sarah sighed.
"He wouldn't have understood nor believed me at the time, after you were gone I just hoped I could get back what I had before you ran out of time, but it seems I would've failed if you hadn't taken your fate into your own hands." Said Sarah as Adam nodded.
"So how exactly are you guys gonna fix me?" Asked Adam as Sarah looked over at Bruce who was taking samples of her blood out of the fridge.
"Well we're going to take your mother's blood and break it down to it's bare elements with that hopefully we can pin point the exact enzyme in her blood that we used to cure her of whatever affects her and now you." Said Bruce as he placed the vial in a machine and started the machine. "It may take a while but you're free to go upstairs if you'd like." Said Bruce as Adam looked at Sarah.
"Upstairs?" Asked Adam as Sarah smiled.
"Come on let me show you, where I grew up." Said Sarah as Adam hopped down.

Sarah took Adam upstairs into the manor which seemed to blow his mind. "You grew up in a mansion!" Said Adam as he spun around looking at the architecture of the Wayne Manor.
"You know sometimes I forget how truly amazing this place is." Stated Sarah as Adam ran upstairs and looked down at her from the railing.
"Bet you can't catch me!" Said Adam as he ran off. Sarah smiled realizing that Adam didn't really get a chance to just be a kid and neither did she really so she ran after him and laughed the entire time. She ran up the stairs and lost track of him so she wandered around for a minute until she heard him panting then followed the sound into her old bedroom. She saw him laying on the floor on her fluffy white rug sprawled out. "I'm tired, you win." Said Adam as he smiled. Sarah sat down on the floor and laid next to him.
"So if you could do anything in the world, what would you do?" Asked Sarah as Adam threw up his arms.
"I'm doing it right now!" He said as he sat up. "For as long as I could remember all I wanted was to meet you and know why you weren't around and I've done that so now I'm kind of all out of wishes." Said Adam as Sarah sat up and crossed her legs.
"Ok well since you seem so interested in me, is there anything you wanna know?" Asked Sarah as Adam thought about it.
"How old were you when all this was happening to you?" Asked Adam as Sarah sighed.
"I was a little bit older than you, Bruce said I was 14 when I died." Said Sarah as Adam hung his head.
"Is dying gonna hurt?" Asked Adam as Sarah held his hand.
"The time leading up to it is going to hurt but when the time really comes it'll be like falling asleep." Said Sarah as Adam nodded then Adam stared at their hands for a second.
"Why do I only have patches when you're completely covered?" Asked Adam as he looked at the back of his right hand showing a patch of white skin on the side of his hand and along the backs of his fingers.
"Well my theory is that it's a stress related change. See your grandfather told me that he was already stressed when he became this way, he also told me that my color faded after he gave me away." Said Sarah as she stood and plucked a picture of her wall. "Then after I was cured I looked a lot more like you." Said Sarah as she handed the photo of her and Bruce which was taken shortly after she was cured. "Then after I lost you and was incarcerated and experimented in Arkham I changed back, it's rather odd but I don't think yours will change." Said Sarah as Adam smiled.
"Good cause I like them, it makes me different and I like being different." Said Adam with a grin.
