Chapter 23: Fatherly Duties

Daniel pulled up in his car to the warehouse he knew Sarah had been hiding out in. He stepped out and walked inside. Everyone inside greeted him warmly as they saw him as one of them due to the experiments that gave him his new found abilities which he was getting a handle on controlling though he had yet to find a way to turn them off so he wore thick rubber gloves to make sure he didn't accidentally shock anyone.

He went up to Sarah's office but only found Joker. "If you're here then she's not with you. Shit!" He muttered to himself as he stood from the couch. "Why are you even looking for my daughter? Last time I checked she wanted absolutely nothing to do with you!" Barked Joker as Daniel scoffed realizing that Sarah hadn't told him about the two of them getting back together nor about her being 3 weeks pregnant.
"Why does it matter to you?! You haven't been around here in weeks!" Barked Daniel avoiding the question.
"I was busy but that's not important! The important thing is that my little girl made it very clear that she wants nothing to do with you!" Barked Joker as Daniel had enough of Joker trying to drive him away from the mother of his child.
"SHE'S NOT YOUR LITTLE GIRL JOKER! SHE'S A GROWN ASS WOMAN WHO CAN TAKE CARE OF HER OWN DAMN LIFE! She took me back, you psychotic asshole! And she's pregnant with my child so you're just gonna have to deal with me being around!" Daniel shouted at him and Joker stood there for a second. Daniel expected to get hit or shot or something but instead he felt rather light headed and dizzy. He felt like the room was spinning and then as Joker went to hit him Daniel collapsed and passed out without Joker ever laying a hand on him.

Daniel woke up in the backseat of his car with a throbbing pain in his face. He touched his nose and found that it was bleeding. He looked forward and saw Edward driving his car. "Dad? What happened?" Asked Daniel as he leaned forward between the two front seats.
"Don't worry I'm getting you home, we got a surprise waiting for you there." Said his father in a tone that almost felt ominous. Daniel sat back uncertain of the world around him as he started to panic a bit. Daniel watched as the world was going by so quickly it felt like a blur. He just sat back nervously staring at the back of his father's head hoping he wasn't dead again.

They pulled up on the house and Edward helped Daniel out of the car though Daniel shoved him off knowing that there was definitely something wrong because Edward looked on the verge of tears. Daniel wandered into the house and saw Sarah sitting in the parlor talking with Oswald and his mom. "Ok I must be dead!" Said Daniel as he stood in the doorway.
"Is it so hard to believe that my Oswald could be such a gentleman?" Asked Gertrude as it seemed more like she was praising him.
"To Sarah yes. Never once have I seen these two in the same room not at least threatening to rip each other's throats out." Said Daniel as he walked over and sat next to Sarah.
"Sarah and I have reached an understanding." Stated Oswald firmly as he and Sarah looked at each other.
"Well you must've because you used her name instead of just referring to her by her pronouns." Said Daniel as he put his arm around Sarah's shoulders but Sarah took one look at him and had to ask.
"What happened to your face?" Asked Sarah as Oswald laughed.
"I was gonna say!" He said with a smile as Daniel turned and looked over his shoulder looking at his father who was walking in after him.
"Dad?" Asked Daniel as Edward walked through the room and stood next to Oswald.
"Joker says you passed out and broke your nose against the floor but I don't know how much I believe his story." Said Edward as Sarah put her hands on the sides of Daniel's face staring at the injury.
"No my Dad would've taken credit for it the moment someone asked about it, Dad genuinely hates the idea of Daniel and I being together." Said Sarah as she reached over grabbing a tissue to clean the dried blood from Daniel's face.
"I still don't understand why he hates me so much!" Said Daniel as Sarah sighed and glanced at Oswald.
"The same reason Oswald hated me." Said Sarah as she was aware that everyone was listening to her. "Because my Dad and Oswald hate each other they automatically assume that anyone related to the person is a carbon copy of the person they hate." Said Sarah as she looked over at Oswald. "Plus you both have trust issues about losing the people you love so the thought of the person you hate the most taking the person you love the most from you, of course someone would find that upsetting." Said Sarah as she then continued to clean the blood off of Daniel's face.
"I hate that you just compared me to your father but it makes sense why, family is the only thing that matters to me anymore." Said Oswald as he squeezed his mother's hand.
"Come on Daniel, we need to talk." Said Sarah as she stood and took Daniel's hand. As they went up the stairs he heard Oswald faintly say "We can't lose him" which made Daniel's worries return.
