Chapter 35: The End Flickers Beyond

Sarah sat in her office of the warehouse that she had been using to give her fellow victims of Anita Halestrum's experiments a place to feel safe when Vanessa stood in the doorway and knocked. "What is it V?" Asked Sarah as Vanessa looked back.
"There's some chick in a silver suit here to see you." Said Vanessa as Sarah grew stiff.
"Show her in." Said Sarah as Vanessa walked off but Abigail walked inside.
"I've been missing you." Said Abigail as she kissed the side of Sarah's neck which made her skin crawl. "I know what you've been looking for." Abigail whispered as Sarah felt a chill down her spine. "Very bad girl, Sarah!" Said Abigail as she dug her nails into Sarah's side.
"I-I'm sorry!" Sarah squeaked as Abigail's grip got tighter.
"Too late!" Abigail growled as she slammed Sarah down onto the floor gripping her by her throat.
"Mom?" Asked Adam's trembling voice as she looked over and saw him standing there.
"You must be Adam... I think you'll do nicely." Said Abigail as she stepped over Sarah and went towards Adam.
"Adam run!" She shouted as she quickly bolted up off the floor and grabbed an old 2 by 4 and smacked her across the back of the head with it. Sarah ran over to Adam and grabbed him by his shoulders. "When I tell you to run, you run! Do you understand me!?" Shouted Sarah as she tears streaming down his face. Sarah held him close for a second and ran with him down the stairs. Suddenly the two ran into Joker and Daniel who had just entered.
"Sarah what's going on?" Asked Daniel as Sarah looked very panicked.
"We need to get out of here now! Abigail knows everything!" Said Sarah as Daniel immediately knew that she was scared. Suddenly gunshots went off and Sarah's shoulder started bleeding. She turned back and saw Abigail standing on the balcony that led to Sarah's office holding two guns, one a simple Glock and the other was unrecognizable but on the side of the gun in black bold letters was Odyssey. "Dad take Adam and get out of here!" Sarah barked as Joker grabbed her arm.
"I'm not leaving you!" Said Joker firmly as Sarah knew there was no convincing him otherwise. "Hey Abbie! I surrender! You can have everything of mine just leave my family alone!" Stated Joker as Abigail grinned and came down the stairs.
"Well then I guess the terms of the deal will still apply." Said Abigail as she tossed the Glock aside and clicked back the lever on the Odyssey. "Sarah as promised, I set you free!" She stated as she fired the gun. Sarah closed her eyes knowing there was no way out of it but suddenly she felt the sense of someone standing in front of her. She opened her eyes and saw her father standing in front of her. "NO!" Screamed Abigail as Joker sort of fell back a little bit Sarah caught him.
"D-dad?" Sarah stuttered as she held him seeing the large hole in his chest. Abigail went to press the detonator on the gun but Daniel shocked her, knocking her unconscious. Joker coughed a little spitting up blood. "No, no, no, no, no!" Sarah said as she held onto him. Suddenly Joker dropped onto the floor but as he did he let go of something in his hand. It was a small electronic that was shaped like a bat and it was blinking. Suddenly they all heard the sounds of screeching tires and jet engine noises. That orchestra of aggressive sounds was followed by the thudding footsteps of Bruce running into the warehouse. He didn't even bother asking what happened he just took Joker and Abigail, then insisted that Daniel, Sarah, and Adam follow him in Daniel's car.

They entered the Batcave and locked Abigail in a cell. They hooked up Joker to a life support system and finally discussed what to do. "How is he still alive with that hole in his chest?" Asked Daniel as Sarah sighed.
"Joker made himself immortal like Sarah and Adam are, he couldn't stand the thought of leaving them." Said Bruce in a cold tone full of grief.
"The Odyssey is designed to kill people with my specific abilities but so long as that vial doesn't break he should be able to recover so long as we get the vial out without any of the poison leaking out." Said Sarah as everyone went quiet.
"So what are we gonna do with her?" Asked Daniel as he looked down in the direction of where Abigail's cell was.
"Well I've been building a pretty substantial case against her so an attempt at murder would be the nail on the coffin, I just need evidence." Said Bruce as he looked at Sarah who had her eyes locked on Joker. "Sarah he's gonna be alright." Said Bruce softly as Sarah stood and walked out. "She's not taking this well..." Said Bruce as he hung his head.
"Well of course not, she dedicated her life to him and he never once even thanked her for trying." Said Daniel as Bruce looked at him.
"What are you talking about?" Asked Bruce as Daniel sighed.
"When Sarah and I first lived together I asked her why she wanted to be a psychiatrist and she said that it was because Joker risked everything to save her so she was gonna spend the rest of her life trying to return the favor. I guess she never told him that she felt that way so now she must be thinking she'll never get the chance.

Sarah went down to where they were keeping Abigail and stood there watching her. "Do you want something?" Asked Abigail as Sarah stepped closer to the door, she typed in the code to open the door then stepped inside closing it behind her. Both the look in her eyes and the fact that there was no escape made Abigail nervous. Something about Sarah was different now, this was a side of her she hadn't seen in a long time. Sarah had a cruel sort of look in her eye as she stepped closer. Abigail tried scooting away but only backed herself into a corner. "Get away from me!" She shouted then all that was heard throughout the large cave was Abigail Dupont's blood curdling screaming.

Both Bruce and Daniel came running until they found Sarah standing in the cell in a pool of blood. Her white hands stained dark red with blood dripping from her fingers. Bruce put in the code and Daniel slowly approached her. "Sarah?" Asked Daniel softly as all they could hear were the sounds of her own heavy breathing. Daniel put his hand on her shoulder and she turned, her eyes glowing bright green blood dripping from her face. "Sarah what did you do to Abigail?" Asked Daniel as she blinked like she didn't understand the question. "Come on, let's go clean you up." Said Daniel as he took Sarah's hand and walked her out of there. Bruce ran in and checked on Abigail finding that Sarah ripped out four of Abigail's teeth and clawed open two large gashes along her cheeks to replicate a smile but somehow she was still alive.

Daniel took Sarah up into the mansion and brought her to a bathroom. Once they were finally alone Daniel smiled. "You're just soaked in blood." He said with a chuckle. Daniel then took a wash cloth and soaked it in hot water then wiped the blood off her face. "There that's better." Said Daniel as he then took her hands and rinsed the blood off her hands. Sarah seemed different now, almost child-like but Daniel knew that she was probably in shock and not thinking clearly. "It's gonna be ok Sarah, I promise." Said Daniel as Sarah sighed.
"You don't know that." Said Sarah in a very solemn.
"You make it sound like you don't believe he'll pull through." Said Daniel as Sarah shook her head.
"I really don't think he will... I know that's a horrible thing to think about my own father but I don't know... Something about him recently, it's almost like he knew he was gonna die sooner rather than later. Why else would he have made himself immortal like me unless he thought he was gonna die?" Asked Sarah as she and Daniel locked eyes for a moment. Daniel looked away and grabbed a wash cloth to dry Sarah's hands. "Daniel..." Stated as he finally looked back at her. "If Dad dies I want to admit myself to Arkham." Said Sarah as Daniel squeezed her hand.
"Why?" Asked Daniel as his voice carried a tone of concern.
"Dad was so proud of me when I became a psychiatrist at Arkham and if I lose him then I refuse to continue my life in a way he never wanted for me. Being a psychiatrist made me happy and all he wanted was for me to be happy. I don't want him to die for nothing." Said Sarah as tears rolled down her face. Daniel kissed her forehead and held her close.
"If you think that's the best way to honor him then I'll support you." Said Daniel as Sarah wrapped her arms around his midsection and buried her face in his chest.
"Thank you." Said Sarah as Daniel held her and kissed the top of her head.

While Daniel was trying to keep Sarah from falling to pieces Bruce was having Barbara look through all of Abigail Dupont's logs to see if they could find a way to remove the vial without detonating it. Barbara sent Bruce a video that was simply labeled Odyssey. Bruce played the video and was greeted by the smiling face of a young girl, just a little older than Adam, standing in a makeshift laboratory. "Hello my name is Misty Kline and I heard through the grapevine that you're looking for an technologies expert." She stated as she adjusted her wire framed round glasses. "I hear you have a little pest that needs taking care of so I bring you a device I call Odyssey." Said the girl as she aimed the camera down to her work station. "The device is very simple." She stated as she held up a strange looking gun and an even stranger looking vial. The gun was clunky and thick, sort of like Joker's lethal bang gun. "First you fill this vial with any kind of toxin or poison you want then you seal the chamber with this metal cap. You click on the detonator shield and then load it into the gun like so." Said the girl as she opened the back of the gun and slid the capsule in. "Let me show you how this puppy works." The girl then adjusted the camera to reveal a man tied to a chair. He had duct tape over his mouth and a cloth over his eyes. He whimpered softly out of fear as she cocked back the lever on the back and aimed the gun at the center of the man's chest. She pulled the trigger and the man was knocked back onto the ground. She took the camera and showed the large hole that was in the man's chest. "You see the detonator shield also shoots off these tiny little spikes that ensure that the device is firmly lodged in person's body and don't even if you don't hit the detonate button on the gun itself the moment they try to remove the vial from the person's body the poison will be injected through the little needles and they'll be dead in minutes. So that should take care of your little immortal pest, Sarah Ivory." Said the girl as the video cut out. Bruce looked over at Joker with a tear running down his face.
"He's doomed." Said Bruce as his voice showed true fear.
