FIVE WEEKS AGO

Its been a couple days since my brother, Rick, had been shot. the doctors performed surgery and then informed us that he was in a coma. After that I hardly left his side, only ever leaving if  Shane came in or so that I could check up on my sister-in-law and nephew. I just left their house after bringing them some food that they neighbor gave them, then I started to drive back to the hospital he was at. I haven't been to work since he got shot, I'm a teacher at Carl's school, lucky enough to have Carl in my class this year. But I cant go in there, which luckily people understand.

As I was driving down to the hospital, I heard another one of those crazy stories on the radio, of the dead. I didn't know what to think of them, they were scary to say the lest, but living dead folk? that doesn't feel right. I listened to the radio for just a bit longer before an  EAS started blaring, saying this was not a test and to evacuate as soon as possible.

Rick.

Rick was still in the hospital. I slammed my foot on the gas, and as I got there I realized Shane was already there, and he quickly pulled me inside as we watched as people, Soldiers, shoot down innocent people. Not the dead, living people. we looked at each other before running back to Rick, Still unconscious. Its only been about 4 days since he was shot, how could he live in a condition like this. I looked at the vase of flowers by his head, alive, fresh, Shane must have bought them.

"wake up rick!" I whispered as I gently shook him, but it was useless. he'd be in a coma for a long while.. if he even made it out alive.. but I didn't wanna think of that. I  look up as I felt hot tears coming to my face, then I looked to Shane, trying to wake your brother up, but you knew it was no use. I put my hand on his shoulder and shook my head lightly, too shook and grief stricken to say anything. Shane rested his head against Ricks chest, listening for a heart beat, but I guess he didn't find one, because he grabbed me, pulled me outside once the coast was clear, and I helped him push a bed in front of the door to Ricks room, then we left.

I went to Rick and Lori's place, that's where all my stuff was, finding them packed and ready to go with one extra pair of clothes and some necessities. I grabbed what I needed and we all piled into Shane's Jeep and Drove off, once we hit a large Jam, Lori left the car while Shane flipped through radio stations to try to hear anything, I stayed with Carl, hugging him and humming him soft tunes to try and distract him, plus it was night time so I was hoping to help him sleep a bit better. Cars all around us were honking tho, and the radio static wasn't helping, so I figured it was a damn slim chance. So I brought Carl out, and he started playing Checkers with another girl from his class, Sophia. Lori and Carol, Sophia's mother, Were quietly whispering to each other while I watched the two children play. Soon though, a helicopter could be heard from above, and Sophia looked up at her mother.

"Are we gonna go soon?" she asked quietly.

"I dunno baby. I sure hope so.." Carol said to her daughter gently, truthfully.

Carl looked up at me then to Lori, "I'm hungry" he said, and I knew he wasn't complaining to complain, we were all hungry.

I rubbed his back gently as his mother replied, "I know Carl, we all are."

Carol looked up at Lori after she said that and replied softly, "Oh, why don't i get him something to eat?" she offered. "Ed's into all this, survival stuff, we've got enough M.R.E.'s to feed a small army." she stated as she walked around the car.

"we sure appreciate it" I said as I smiled down at my nephew, whispering into his ear, "remember your manners."

"Oh, no trouble." Carol replied to me as she passed Ed. I already had a bad vibe from him, but I wouldn't say anything to him.
