The longer the silence after Heishe's words last, the more intense the glances resting on you become, until they burn on your skin so hot they almost make you want to flee.
"So what you're saying is...", you start tonelessly, almost afraid to speak the words, "that you want me to... kill the families of the men who banished you to this cave...?"
The lack of a response and the unrelenting intensity of their glances give you the answer you need, and so you lean backwards, take a deep breath and then chug your drink in one long sip.
You're about to decline, but then you hesitate. Suddenly you realize that if you don't agree to this plan, the Sins will be stuck in this cave for possibly forever.
"You are forcing me into an impossible decision", you therefore say quietly, lifting your glance to look at every single Sin. The severity of the situation makes your voice tense and pressed. "You are aware of that, right?"
In unison, their shoulders relax, and you hear several sighs as the tension lightens a bit.
"Yes, we know", Jin says. He sounds apologetic, almost tired, and his eyes have finally softened as he now returns your glance directly. "We're not taking this lightly either."
"And we understand if you can't", Yoongi adds, although his words earn him a couple doubtful glances from across the room. "We cannot force you, after all."
"But I ask you to think about it", Namjoon contradicts Pride. He sounds just as apologetic as Jin, but there's a hint of pleading in his voice that you cannot ignore. "If you decide not to help us... which we would respect, of course..." He trails off, intertwines his fingers and stares down at his hands. "We probably wouldn't survive the war. Not in this cave. Not as we are right now."
He takes a deep, deep breath, then looks over to you.
"Please."
It's the first time you have heard Namjoon genuinely plead for something, and despite your confusion and disapproval, it makes your heart flutter. You are painfully aware of how much it would mean to the Sins if they could return to the surface. You can only imagine how much they long for the sight of starry nights and the smell of rain, or even a couple sunbeams on their faces.
"Keep in mind, Y/N", Hoseok chimes in and rips you out of your thoughts, "that the descendants of those men could very well already be dead. There is no proof that the families are alive at all." His voice takes on a frustrated tone. "For all we know, we could have been able to leave the cave 100 years ago, but we couldn't confirm it, and simply trying to leave was too big a risk."
You realize he's right. The Sins have been down here for over 200 years, and the probability that the families of the men who banned them to this cave are still alive is quite low.
Jungkook clears his throat. It's the first sound he's made the entire time, and thus, it immediately catches your attention.
"Also, while... well, killing them is the easiest if they're still alive, you could also try and coerce them into simply dissolving the contract." His eyes narrow. "I'm sure Heishe could help you with the necessary ritual" – the familiar nods – "and if you are opposed to killing humans, that is the best option we have."
Taehyung sighs. "True. But if they refuse..." He throws you a long glance. "You're going to have to be prepared for the worst, Y/N."
You lift your hand and run it through your hair in distress, weighing all of your options. "I don't really have a choice, do I?", you mumble to yourself, even though the words leave a bitter aftertaste in your mouth.
You always have a choice, Daimon speaks up in your mind. But whether that choice is the right thing to do, or whether others will appreciate it...
