This time, the silence lasts a while before the woman replies. Confusion, fear and anger are mixing in her eyes, but you keep quiet to give her the time she needs to gather her thoughts.
When she finally speaks up, the sudden fire in her eyes surprises you.
"What do you want with me?", she presses, clearly trying to stay calm.
This time it's you who stays quiet, and you carefully consider what to say.
"I want you to help me", you finally say. The woman eyes you suspiciously, but she doesn't jump up and kick you out of the house like you expected her to.
"What with?", she asks warily, and you take a deep breath. This is the difficult question you have been expecting, and you're still not completely sure how to answer it without making her either panic or explode with anger.
"I'm not sure if the stories have been told in your family", you start, quickly counting generations before you continue, "and I am not sure of how exactly it went myself. But a couple hundred years ago, your great-grandfather or great-great-grandfather made a deal with some... supernatural beings."
As soon as you speak the last words, you see a gleam of realisation in her eyes.
"The contract", she whispers. "You're here for the contract."
You nod.
The woman looks even stiffer now, but the fear in her eyes is gone. You can't help but admire her confidence and determination.
"You're not here to kill me, otherwise you already would have tried", she concludes, eyeing you up again. "Who are you? And what do you want exactly?"
You breathe in again. Despite the fact that you don't really need the air, feeling your lungs expand calms you down.
"My name is Y/N", you say, looking her directly in the eyes. "I am a friend of the Seven."
This time, she finally gasps and stares at you with widened eyes, her shock evident in her expression when she realizes what this means.
"You're one of them", she quietly says. It's neither a question nor a statement but an utterance somewhere in between.
You lower your head in a slight nod. "I am", you say. It's the first time you're admitting your true being to a human, and the words feel weird on your tongue.
The woman seems to be fighting against the urge to jump up and flee from the house, but you can't tell whether it's because she wants to hear what you have to say or because she knows she wouldn't stand a chance.
After a few moments, she exhales sharply and seems to be regaining her composure. "So what do you want from me, Y/N?", she asks.
You look at her for a while until she shifts uncomfortably, then you speak up again, making your voice sound as calm and neutral as possible.
"I need you to revoke the contract."
The woman stares at you for a second, then she bursts into loud laughter and slaps her hand on the table. "Revoke the contract?", she giggles after she's calmed down, looking at you. "Only for the Sins to come here and murder me as revenge for what my ancestors did? You must be dreaming."
The grin vanishes from her face and her expression grows grim.
"I would be stupid to do anything of that sort", she then says decidedly.
You gather your thoughts, then you lift your chin confidently.
"There is war in hell", you play your trump card. The woman freezes. "If not the Seven, other demons will come for this land and kill you and anyone who's related to demon hunters. Demons much stronger and more influential than the Seven."
