Jennifer's P.O.V
The doorbell rang, and though I knew what it could be, I didn't expect it so soon. Ben had texted me earlier to let me know that the furniture for the nursery would arrive that week.
I pushed myself upright, which was no longer the easy task I remembered. I wasn't expecting anyone, so I padded barefoot towards the front door in my stay-at-home clothes and my messy bun. As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I heard the doorbell ring again. I opened the door to find two delivery men, struggling to carry a large cardboard box up the entrance steps. I offered to help, but of course they declined. I don't even know how I was thinking about moving such a heavy load being pregnant.
After a few trips, they finally managed to get all the boxes into the living room. Realizing I was alone, they offered to take them upstairs and into the nursery. That was a harder battle.
They left and I was alone again, but this time I had a room full of unboxed baby furniture that made me long for the future. Apart from the crib, the rocking chair, and the changing table, there were other boxes I couldn't identify. Those were much smaller and definitely lighter. Apparently, Ben had ordered some things without telling me.
One by one, I opened each box, taking in every detail as I unwrapped every nursery item. My heart hitched when I pulled out an adorable teddy bear that looked just like the one I had when I was a baby. He knew because I had showed him a picture, and he managed to get one that looked exactly the same.
As I pulled out the rest of the small items, I began to feel a heavy sense of emotion. It dawned on me that this was real, and in just a few months' time, we would be parents together to a tiny human being who would soon occupy that very room.
As I sat on the plush rug we had placed in the center of the empty nursery a few days before, surrounded by all the things Ben had ordered, emotions welled up in my chest. A subtle smile played across my face.
Ben had already put so much thought and effort into our unborn child's life. The excitement I felt in that moment was something I hadn't felt in so long. Looking around the room, I saw how much love and caring he had put into choosing those items. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, feeling a sense of calm wash over me because I knew that our baby would grow up in a home full of love.
My phone rang right there while I was still sitting. I answered the video call right away when I saw it was Ben. His smiling face appeared on my screen, and my heart leapt with joy. He was calling from the airport.
"Hey, little." Ben's voice sounded soothing through the phone.
"Hey there." I replied.
"I miss you." He said. "How are you feeling?"
"I miss you so much." I answered.
"I'll be home soon." He smiled.
"I can't wait." I said. "Ben, I just saw the things you ordered. They're perfect."
He was about to say something, but the image suddenly froze.
"Oh no." I complained.
"Jen?" His voice sounded distant.
"I can't see you anymore." I replied.
But his voice also cut off. I could only wait for it to resume when his connection was better. Finally, the image on my screen cleared up, but it showed that Ben had disconnected from the call. As I shut down my phone, I felt a new surge of excitement. He would be home soon after being away for a week. I got up from the rug feeling a renewed energy, brushing a strand of hair off of my face and smiling with anticipation.
