As dawn approached, the train began to slow, gradually coming to a stop. Thomas gently shook Ellie awake, her eyelids fluttering open to reveal a pair of bright, inquisitive eyes. "Morning, sweetheart," he greeted her, his voice laced with warmth.

He lifted her into his arms, cradling her against his hip, and reached for his traveling case with his free hand. Stepping off the train, he took in a deep breath of the salty sea air. The tang of the ocean mingled with the cool breeze, invigorating his senses.

A short walk brought them to a vantage point where Thomas could see the vast expanse of the sea. Its calming rhythm and majestic beauty filled him with a sense of peace. "Look, Ellie," he exclaimed, pointing towards the horizon. "That's the sea, just like you love."

Ellie's eyes widened, and she pointed excitedly. "Water, Daddy! Water!"

Thomas smiled, his heart overflowing with joy at his daughter's innocent delight. "Yes, my love, it's water. And we're going to live by the sea for a while. Isn't that wonderful?"

Ellie nodded vigorously, her eyes shining with anticipation eager to find the cottage that would be their home for the next six months. The path led them through winding lanes, lined with vibrant flowers and quaint cottages.

Finally, they arrived at their destination—a charming little cottage nestled among rolling hills, just a stone's throw away from the beach. Thomas pushed open the creaky gate and stepped onto the front porch, Ellie still held securely in his arms.

Thomas unlocked the front door and stepped inside. The cottage was simple yet welcoming, with sunlight filtering through lace curtains and casting a warm glow on the polished wooden floors. It felt like a sanctuary, a place where they could heal and find peace.

As Thomas crossed the threshold, Ellie squirmed in his arms, eager to explore.

Carefully setting her down Thomas watched with affectionate eyes as she toddled off, her bunny teddy held tightly in her grasp. The cottage was a treasure trove of new discoveries for her curious mind, and Thomas couldn't help but smile as he observed his daughter exploring her surroundings. Her cerebral palsy may have affected her balance, movement, and posture, but it couldn't dampen her spirit or curiosity.

Ellie hopped from room to room, her excitement palpable. She examined the trinkets on shelves, ran her fingers along the patterned wallpaper, and laughed joyously as she discovered a cozy nook by the window, perfect for daydreaming.

With an endearing mix of cautiousness and excitement, she ventured a little more through the   cottage, her steps becoming more confident with each passing moment. Thomas followed closely behind, ensuring her safety while giving her the freedom to discover the space on her own.

The cottage was cozy and welcoming, with a small living area bathed in sunlight that filtered through lace curtains. Ellie's eyes widened as she took in the quaint furniture and the vibrant paintings adorning the walls. Her tiny fingers traced the intricate patterns on a delicate china teacup, her face alive with curiosity.

Thomas watched Ellie's exploration with a tenderness that filled his heart to the brim. He had faced numerous challenges as a single father, from the day Ellie was born to the recent incident at school where she was attacked by older boys. The fractured skull had been a terrifying ordeal, but after three long weeks in the hospital, Ellie had made a remarkable recovery. Her injuries had healed, and Thomas was determined to give her a fresh start, away from the judgmental eyes and cruel taunts.

As Ellie ventured further into the cottage, her bunny teddy leading the way, Thomas took a moment to reflect on their journey. Life had thrown them unexpected twists and turns, but in his daughter's eyes, he found strength and solace.

"Take your time, Ellie," Thomas encouraged softly. "Explore to your heart's content. This cottage is our home now, and we'll make it the most magical place for you."

Ellie turned towards her father, her eyes sparkling with an innocent wonder. She toddled back to him, wrapping her tiny arms around his legs in a tight embrace. Thomas scooped her up, holding her close to his chest, and planted a tender kiss on her forehead. "You and me, Ellie," he murmured. "We'll face any challenge together."

Thomas took in the quaint surroundings. The cottage exuded a cozy charm, the furniture inviting and well-loved. It was a sanctuary, a place where they could heal together. He imagined cozy nights by the fireplace, sharing stories and laughter, as they embraced this new chapter in their lives.

Thomas set about unpacking their belongings and once their humble abode began to feel like home, Thomas turned his attention to lunch. He prepared a simple meal of sandwiches and fruit.

"Here you go, my girl," Thomas said, placing a plate in front of Ellie. "Enjoy your lunch, sweetheart."

As they ate, Thomas's mind drifted back to their time at Downton Abbey. He had left his position as footman to focus on Ellie's well-being and provide her with the care she needed. The decision hadn't been easy, but he knew it was the right one. Downton had been a part of their lives for so long, but now it was time for a fresh start—a chance for them to forge their own path.

The sound of seagulls outside interrupted his thoughts, and Thomas looked out the window, taking in the breathtaking view of the coastline. He felt a renewed sense of peace knowing that this new beginning held endless possibilities for Ellie and himself.
