As Thomas felt the call of nature, he knew he had to leave the comfort of his bed, he carefully placed Finley in the bassinet next to his bed. Pushing back the sheets, he prepared to get up, but immediately, his body reminded him of the toll the recent birth had taken. His stomach felt tense and tender, discomfort coursing through him. It still caused him to wince and take in a sharp breath as he closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again.
Watching her father's expression change, Ellie's face furrowed with worry. She shifted closer to the edge of the bed, her small legs dangling. "Daddy, are you o - okay?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. Thomas paused for a moment, his hand pressed against his stomach, as he mustered a reassuring smile.
"Yes, sweetheart," he replied gently, his voice laced with a touch of discomfort. "Daddy's just a bit sore, but it's normal after having a baby. I'll be okay. I just need to use the bathroom." Thomas appreciated Ellie's caring nature and was proud of her empathy at such a young age.
Ellie nodded, but her worry didn't completely dissipate. She had seen her father endure his fair share of hardships, both physical and emotional, and she had developed a keen sense of empathy. She knew that his pain, even if he downplayed it, was real. Yet, at such a tender age, there was little she could do to alleviate it.
With every step he took, Thomas could feel the strain on his body. He walked slowly, deliberately, down the hallway toward the bathroom. Each movement required him to summon all his strength, and he found himself leaning against the wall for support. The journey, which was usually effortless, felt like an arduous trek this time.
Finally reaching the bathroom, Thomas closed the door behind him and took a moment to lean against it, his forehead pressed against the cool surface. His breathing was labored, and he had to remind himself to take slow, deep breaths to manage the discomfort. The physical strain was tangible, but he knew it was temporary.
As he relieved himself, Thomas's mind wandered back to his two precious children. Finley, the newest addition to their family, was a blessing they had eagerly awaited. Ellie, his beautiful daughter, held a special place in his heart. The challenges they faced together only made their bond stronger.
After finishing in the bathroom, Thomas mustered the strength to make the journey back to his room.
Returning to his room, Thomas despite the physical discomfort, he mustered a smile as he reentered the room, where Ellie was waiting patiently. She looked up at him, her bright eyes filled with love and concern.
"Daddy, are you feeling b - better now?" she asked, her voice soft and full of innocence. Thomas moved toward her and sat on the bed, taking Ellie into his arms. He kissed the top of her head and breathed in the familiar scent of her hair.
"I'm getting there, my love," Thomas replied, his voice filled with tenderness.
It amazed Thomas how perceptive his young daughter was, always attuned to his emotions and well-being.
"Let's get back into bed, sweetheart," Thomas said softly, his voice filled with tenderness.
Ellie nodded, her smile widening. She scooted over to make room for her father, and together they climbed back into bed.
Determined to help her father in any way she could, scooted closer to him, snuggling into his side. She was mindful of his tender stomach as she gently lifted up his shirt, exposing the area that caused him discomfort. With her tiny hand, she began to rub his stomach, her touch gentle and soothing.
Ellie's loving gesture filled Thomas with warmth and gratitude. He marvelled at the beautiful connection he shared with his daughter and the love she exuded at such a young age. Feeling her small, delicate fingers massaging his sore muscles, Thomas relaxed, the pain gradually easing away.
Thomas's heart swelled with love and gratitude for his daughter. Despite her young age and her own struggles with cerebral palsy, she always managed to find ways to show her love and support. Her touch, though gentle, brought him a sense of comfort that no medicine could provide.
"Thank you, sweetheart," Thomas whispered, his voice filled with emotion.
Ellie beamed at her father's words, her eyes shining with pride. She continued to rub his stomach, her small hand moving in slow, circular motions. Her presence and her simple act of love reminded Thomas that he was not alone in his struggles. He had his daughter by his side, and together, they could face anything that came their way.
She had seen her father take care of her and understood the concept of providing comfort. Now, she wanted to do the same for him. Thomas felt a warmth spread through his tired body as he realised the depth of his daughter's empathy and love.
Ellie smiled up at her father, her eyes shining with affection. "I love you, Daddy. I w - want you to feel b - better."
Thomas felt a lump form in his throat as he looked at his daughter. Despite her own challenges, she always managed to find ways to show her love and care for others. In that moment, he felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for having her in his life.
"I love you too, Ellie," Thomas replied, his voice filled with emotion. "Having you here with me makes everything better. You're my little angel."
