Thomas closed his eyes and let himself drift into a much-needed slumber. The room was filled with a serene silence, broken only by the gentle rise and fall of his son's breathing. He found solace in that rhythmic sound, as it served as a reminder of the new life he had brought into the world.

It was early afternoon when Thomas eventually stirred from his sleep. As his eyes adjusted to the soft glow of the sun that bathed his room, he shifted slightly, careful not to disturb his son's rest. Gazing down at the precious bundle laying in a curled up position on his chest, he couldn't help but smile.

With his left hand, Thomas tenderly stroked the small of his son's back, feeling the delicate curve of his spine beneath his fingertips. The gesture was filled with love and protection, a silent vow to always be there for his child.

Leaning down, Thomas pressed a feather-light kiss on top of his son's downy head, filled with a mixture of pride, joy, and unwavering devotion.

Soon the door to his room creaked open, as Mrs Hughes stepped in with a warm smile. "Thomas, my dear, I thought I'd bring you some tea and sandwiches. You must be famished."

"Thank you, Mrs Hughes," Thomas replied gratefully. "I could use a bit of sustenance." He carefully adjusted his son, making sure Finley was secure in his arms before accepting the tray from her.

"How are you feeling, Thomas?" She asked, her concern evident in her kind eyes.

Thomas sighed softly. "Exhausted, but overjoyed."

"He's a beautiful baby," Mrs Hughes said, leaning closer to get a better look at Finley. "He looks just like you, Thomas."

A mix of emotions swirled within Thomas as he studied his son's features. "Yes, he does, doesn't he?" he said with a hint of pride. "I can't believe he's finally here."

"He'll bring you so much joy, just like Ellie.", she replied, her smile warm and encouraging. "Now, don't forget to take care of yourself, too. You need to rest after what you've been through."

After Mrs Hughes left, Thomas settled back against the pillows, holding Finley close to his chest once again.

Leaning down, Thomas pressed a gentle kiss on Finley's downy head. "You and your sister are my world," he whispered, his voice brimming with emotion. "I will love and protect you both with every fibre of my being, no matter what challenges lie ahead."

"You are my little miracle, Finley," Thomas murmured, his voice filled with emotion. "You may not have come to me in the usual way, but you are my heart and soul, and I promise to love you and protect you every step of the way."

Finley stirred slightly in his sleep, as if sensing the depth of his father's love and dedication. Thomas smiled, knowing that their bond was something special and unbreakable.

However, his reverie was interrupted by the creak of the bedroom door. It swung open to reveal Ellie, clutching a bottle of milk for her little brother. Relief and worry intertwined in Thomas's heart as he watched her carefully climb onto the bed and settle beside him.

"Ellie, darling," Thomas said, his voice filled with concern. "Did you come up here on your own? You could have fallen and hurt yourself."

Ellie looked up at her father with wide, innocent eyes, her raven hair framing her face. She shook her head and explained, "No, Daddy. Mrs. Hughes h - helped me get u - up the stairs."

Thomas reached out to ruffle Ellie's hair gently, a small smile tugging at the corners of his tired lips. "Thank goodness for Mrs. Hughes," he murmured, his voice tinged with relief. "I'm glad you're safe, my sweet girl. You're such a good big sister, looking out for your little brother."

Ellie beamed with pride, and her eyes filled with affection. Thomas couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the love and bond that existed between his children.

Finley had soon woken up and was clearly eager for his milk.

Thomas gently shifted Finley from his chest to a comfortable position in his arms, allowing the baby to take the bottle with his tiny mouth. As Finley started to suckle, Ellie watched with fascination, her eyes fixed on her baby brother's every movement.

With a heartwarming reassurance, Thomas let go of his worry and focused on the moment. He fed Finley his milk, listening to his adorable noises and watching his little eyes open and fixate on his face.

"I love y - you, Daddy," Ellie said, her voice soft and sincere.

"I love you too, Ellie," Thomas replied, a lump forming in his throat. "And I love you too, Finley," he added.

As he continued to feed Finley, Thomas thought about the journey that had led him to this point.

He remembered the early days of Ellie's life, how she struggled with even the simplest tasks. But he was always there, supporting her, encouraging her to never give up. Thomas had learned to be her advocate, fighting for her needs.

Despite the difficulties, Ellie had grown into a vibrant, determined little girl, always eager to explore the world around her. And now, with Finley's arrival, Thomas knew that their bond as a family would only grow stronger.

As Finley finished his milk, Thomas gently burped him and settled him back against his chest. Ellie, feeling responsible for her brother's comfort, carefully tucked a soft blanket around him.

"Daddy, can I play with Finley when he's bigger?" she asked, her eyes filled with curiosity.

Thomas chuckled warmly, "Of course, sweetheart. You'll be the best playmate he could ask for."

Ellie's eyes sparkled with excitement at the thought of sharing adventures with her little brother. Thomas marveled at her resilience and her ability to find joy in even the simplest of things.

As the afternoon sun continued to bathe the room in golden light, Thomas felt a profound sense of contentment. He knew that life as a single father might have its challenges, but with Ellie and Finley by his side, he had everything he could ever need.
