By the morning, as he woke Thomas immediately turned his attention to his daughter Ellie, who lay on the bed beside him. Thomas lovingly watched over her, never leaving her side, especially after she had experienced a bad seizure during the night.

With a gentle touch, he pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, his heart aching for his little girl. He carefully brushed her hair away from her face, wanting to see her more clearly. Ellie's breathing was deep and heavy, evidence of the toll the seizure had taken on her young body.

Before long Ellie started to wake from her deep slumber.

"Hey there, my little warrior," Thomas whispered softly, his heart aching with both worry and love as he looked at Ellie, "How are you feeling?"

Ellie's eyes struggled to focus, her gaze meeting her father's as she mustered a weak smile. "I'm t - tired, Daddy," she said in a hushed tone, her voice barely audible.

Thomas gently caressed her cheek, his heart breaking to see his little girl so worn out. "I know, sweetheart," he replied with empathy, "you had a tough night, didn't you?"

She nodded slowly. "... my head h - hurts," she murmured, her words slurred from exhaustion and the lingering effects of the seizure.

He began to tell her stories, hoping to distract her from the discomfort and exhaustion she was experiencing. He found himself recalling the day when she entered his life and how his heart had swelled with joy and love.

As Ellie rested against her father's side, he recounted the story of her birth to distract her from the discomfort she felt. "You know, when you came into this world, you were the most precious gift I could ever ask for," he began, his voice warm with affection.

Ellie listened intently, her tired eyes fixed on her father's face. Though her movements were limited by cerebral palsy, her spirit and intellect were as bright as any child's. Thomas had always admired her strength and determination, even when faced with challenges that seemed insurmountable.

"I remember it like it was yesterday," Thomas began, his voice tinged with nostalgia. "It was a rainy afternoon. I was so nervous, waiting for you to arrive. When you finally came into this world, you were the most beautiful thing I had ever seen."

Ellie smiled weakly, her eyes closing as fatigue overwhelmed her. Thomas continued to stroke her hair gently, recounting stories from her birth and infancy. He told her how she had come into this world on Remembrance Day in 1924, a day of great significance. It was six years after the end of the war, a time when people were still healing from the scars left by the conflict.

As he spoke, memories flooded back to him—the joy, the fear, and the overwhelming love he had felt from the moment Ellie entered his life. He gently stroked her hair, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible little girl who had changed his world forever.

"And you were such a happy baby," Thomas continued, his voice softening with affection. "You had the most infectious giggle, and it would light up the whole room. Nothing made me happier than seeing you smile."

Ellie's eyes sparkled with delight, savoring the stories of her early days. Thomas recounted more anecdotes, describing the moments they had shared together, the triumphs, and the challenges they had overcome as a team.

"You see, Ellie, you made me a father," he continued. "You made me realize that life is about more than just my own ambitions and desires. From the moment you came into this world, I knew that I had to be better, not only for you but also for myself."

Ellie listened intently, her bright eyes fixed on her father's face as he spoke. Despite her young age, she seemed to understand the weight of his words, sensing the depth of the love he held for her.

"I was a different man before you were born, Ellie," Thomas admitted. "I had my flaws, my shortcomings, and I made mistakes. But you, my sweet girl, you changed me. You taught me to put someone else's needs above my own."

Ellie listened intently, her eyes fixed on her father's face. Though she was only four years old, she understood the love and emotion in his voice.

"I wasn't always the best person, Ellie," Thomas confessed, his voice tinged with vulnerability. "But you, my little miracle, you showed me that I could be more. You taught me patience, compassion, and what it truly means to love unconditionally."

Ellie reached up and gently touched his cheek, a gesture that filled Thomas's heart with warmth.

As Thomas continued to watch over Ellie, he heard the cries of his newborn son, Finley, coming from the bassinet beside his bed. With a heavy heart, he reluctantly left Ellie's side to attend to his little boy. Carefully scooping Finley into his arms, he tried to soothe the newborn's cries with a gentle sway.

"There, there, little one. Daddy's here," he cooed, his voice soft and comforting. Balancing his responsibilities as a father to both his children was a challenging task, but Thomas was determined to give them the best love and care he possibly could.

Once Finley settled in his arms, Thomas returned to Ellie's side. She had opened her eyes, her gaze meeting her father's. Despite her challenges, Ellie's eyes held a spark of determination and love that never failed to touch Thomas's heart. He gently caressed her cheek, letting her know that he was there for her.

Before long there was a knock at the door.

"Come in," Thomas called softly as he held Finley in his arms, his voice weary from the long night. Mrs Hughes entered the room, her warm smile reaching her kind eyes.

"Good morning, Thomas. I brought some breakfast for you and Ellie, and a bottle of milk for Finley," she said gently, placing the tray on the table.

"Thank you, Mrs Hughes," Thomas replied gratefully, but his concern for Ellie was evident in his eyes. "Ellie had a bad seizure during the night, and she's quite exhausted. I need to stay with her and care for her today. Would you mind looking after Finley for me? I hate to ask, but I don't want him to feel neglected while I focus on Ellie."

Mrs Hughes placed a reassuring hand on Thomas's shoulder. "Of course, dear. Don't you worry about Finley; he'll be in good hands. You take care of Ellie, and I'll see to your little one."

Thomas nodded, grateful for Mrs Hughes's understanding and support. Carefully, he handed Finley over to her, making sure to give him a soft kiss on his tiny forehead before letting go. "Be good for Mrs Hughes, Finley," he murmured, feeling a pang of guilt for not being able to give his newborn son all the attention he needed.

Still on Ellie's bed, Thomas had moved and now had his legs crossed and his back against the wall, creating a comfortable spot to cradle his precious daughter. He gently moved Ellie to lay her across his lap, her head resting on his arm as he gently fed her some porridge as she accepted the spoonful.

"Good girl," he praised, his voice full of pride.

Ellie's big, beautiful eyes, despite their struggle to focus at times, remained fixed on her father's face. She trusted him implicitly, knowing that he would always be there for her, no matter what. Thomas leaned in and placed tender kisses on her forehead, his love for her evident in every gesture.

Thomas knew the hardships Ellie faced. Yet, he never once saw her as a burden. She was his daughter, the light of his life, and he would move mountains to make sure she had all the love and care she needed...
