Qiu Ling's brows furrowed deeply and he played with Jing He's fingers absent-mindedly. He hadn't been able to save Jing He from this fate and now it seemed as if he wouldn't be able to help him going forward either. As a lover ... he was really useless.
He kept quiet for a moment but finally looked up again. There wasn't much hope in his gaze but at least he had regained his composure. Anyway, he wasn't willing to give up. This was his beloved they were talking about here. How could he just accept that he would suffer for all eternity? Even if he had made mistakes in the past, he couldn't give up on the future before it even started.
"You said earlier that this could have been prevented if I acted differently before. Now, his soul is already shattered and he has become a fallen god. Despite that, he is going to continue suffering from this ... choice you mentioned that he was tortured by. In this case, is there nothing I can do? I realize I can't undo the past but is there no way to even lessen his pain? I don't want him to continuously think about this and agonize over it. I want him to find happiness."
Tian turned to look at Jing He's face and couldn't help but think of Xiang Yu. It had only been two days since he told him that a fallen god could be saved from their fate and returned to their original state. In all those years since Xing fell, he had never told anyone. Now, there were two people in one week. Fate sure could take strange paths.
After sorting his thoughts for a moment, he turned back to Qiu Ling. His expression hadn't changed but there was something about his gaze that made Qiu Ling straighten up.
"Is there no way?"
Tian shook his head. "Naturally, there is. Although I have to warn you: The past can't be undone just as you said. Some matters, even if you solve them, they will have lasting effects. It has already come to this so no matter what is done, things might never go back to how they were before."
Qiu Ling blinked his eyes. "Well, he is a fallen god now so ... that much is pretty obvious." He blinked again and then cleared his throat. "And I'm saying that with all due respect. Maybe I just don't understand what you're trying to say because this seems like a matter of course to me." Don't kid him. He might have perfected the art of pissing off people but he still wouldn't do that in front of Tian. That sentence just now had slipped out accidentally because he felt that what the supreme sovereign had said before that was really too odd. Of course, he had to try and remedy this slip-up at once.
Tian actually raised his brows faintly. "Much better than that Xin Lan of your race." His expression returned to what it had been before but he still pointed at Jing He. "You are half right. Of course, with him being a fallen god, things are different now. But it is more complicated than that.
"Whether it is the gods or the dragons, they actually know little about the fallen gods because they tend to see them as an issue and kill them if they get the chance. Where would they take the time to understand them? Over time, this sentiment that every fallen god is a lost cause and an eternal danger to society if left unchecked has permeated the understanding all races have of them. In fact, it isn't quite like that."
Tian fell quiet and finally pulled over a chair, sitting down in front of Qiu Ling as if expecting a longer talk. "Do you know why I am still here?"
Qiu Ling gave him a puzzled look. Aside from talking to him? "Uh ... You ... like helping those in need?" His eyes roamed about, trying to think of something better. Remembering the story about Tian and his lover that Jing He had told him, he felt that he might be onto something. "Specifically fallen gods because you have a soft spot for them?"
Tian stared at him silently and finally didn't deign to respond to that. Instead, he just moved on and answered his own question. "My people died one after the other until only I was left. I didn't have to stay around either and I was contemplating to leave. After all, this kind of life is lonely and even though I was never one to crave the company of others, to be all alone is ... unsettling after a while.
"At that time, I had almost made up my mind. I took a last look at this world that I had watched over for so long, intending to bid farewell to it." He stated all of this calmly as if he was talking about somebody else's life and not his own.
Qiu Ling watched him silently, feeling more confused by the minute. Not that he didn't appreciate being given inside information but ... what did this have to do with anything? At most, this was an interesting tidbit he could share with Jing He later. His beloved might like it but that would hardly help him get over the pain of losing his old life and his family.
Or ... could it be that this was what this was about? Was Tian trying to give him an example of what this kind of life that a fallen god might lead was like and then he would add how he had gotten over it? He wasn't sure but he didn't dare to ask either so he could only quietly listen.
At this moment, the supreme sovereign's gaze actually softened the slightest bit. "It was at that time that I saw Xing. And suddenly, I had found a reason to stay. It was a pity that soon after, in nothing more than the blink of an eye, they already took him from me again."
