Bai Fen had a lot of doubts and there were many things to think through but right now didn't seem to be the right time to do so. Qiu Ling would come to the Nine Heavens later and considering her husband's attitude, she'd better not leave these two alone. Even if she couldn't make him behave much better, she at least needed to be there to reassure Qiu Ling afterward.
Making up her mind, she finally left Jing He's palace and walked down the road until she reached her husband's palace instead. Looking up the steps, she felt weary. What was to follow in the next weeks or even months would be a mess. If she got her son back in the end and her husband even made peace with their son-in-law, it would all be worth it. The problem was that she couldn't be sure that that would be the outcome. It was just as likely that Rong Su would continue to make trouble and Jing He ... well, there was no saying what would happen.
She tried not to think too much and walked up to the gates, silently walking inside. Her husband couldn't be seen but he should be around somewhere. He certainly wouldn't have left if he expected everyone else to come by.
Thinking for a moment, she walked over to the study and indeed found her husband sitting at the table. "Did Longjun already arrive?" She doubted it but in the unlikely case that this was indeed true, she'd better go and play hostess. It wasn't like Rong Su would do that, after all.
Rong Su looked up and pursed his lips. His wife hadn't even said hello to him but instead asked about another man. Just what had that bastard from the dragon realm done to charm his family members this much? First, he managed to torment Jing He to the point where he fell and then, he also managed to wrap his wife around his little finger, making her care so much.
Bai Fen raised her brows when she didn't get a response. "Did he or didn't he? Don't tell me you didn't even pay attention to that. Have you had a room prepared?"
Rong Su could only sigh. "I didn't prepare anything. He came in just shortly after everyone left so there was no time at all. He went to find a room by himself though so it's alright."
Bai Fen stared at her husband in silence for a minute and then shook her head. "You do realize he is the dragon king, don't you? No matter what you personally think of him, you can't treat him like this. Even if he himself humors you because of Jing He, as long as Adviser An Bai or the guards from the dragon realm see you do this, it will cause issues. Long-term, if you're not really careful."
Rong Su huffed. "Did he care about long-term issues when he was bothering Jing He? I don't think so. Since he doesn't have to mind his manners, then I don't think I have to."
Bai Fen took a deep breath and wondered for the umpteenth time why exactly she had married this man. How could he be so stubborn? "Rong Su, get over it already. He never forced Jing He to do anything. Those ten years he came by almost every day? He was trying to woo him. It's not something shameful. Our races are allied, he is their king, and he is genuinely interested in being with our son. Get a grip already."
She didn't wait for him to respond and simply turned away. "Anyway, I'll go and see how he is doing. If you can't put your personal feelings aside even for a while, then it seems like I'll have to step up and host him." She walked out with crisp steps, leaving the study and the throne room and grabbing the nearest servant to have them inquire which room Qiu Ling had chosen.
Back in the study, Rong Su stared blankly at the empty doorway. This matter ... he wasn't sure what to make of it. Since Jing He had disappeared, Bai Fen was even shorter with him than usual. Even though they had argued a lot since that matter happened back then, it had never been like this. Seeing the way she looked at him, he was reminded of that time right after her trial, when everything was still fresh.
He tapped the table in front of him, wondering what to do. He didn't want her to be angry at him but he just couldn't bring himself to forgive Qiu Ling for what he had done to his precious son. And even if Jing He hadn't fallen ... he still didn't want him to be with that guy.
Even if Jing He insisted on not marrying the man he had chosen for him, it should still be somebody suitable. The dragon king definitely wasn't. No, the dragons would only complicate everything. It was much better to choose a god as Jing He's spouse. He really couldn't understand why his son and wife weren't able to see that.
Rong Su sighed deeply and picked up the document in front of him that still hadn't been worked through. Knowing that that guy was now living in his palace, waiting for his son to return so he could snatch him up and take him away ... he really didn't have the mind to deal with these small issues.
If only there was something he could do to save his son. Then, everything else could be talked about slowly. Unfortunately, it didn't seem possible. After all, if the dragon king was right, then Jing He was now in the realm of the supreme ruler. As a member of the Heavenly Family, Rong Su really didn't think it wise to go there. If he did, he might even put his precious son in further danger.
