Bai Fen stared at Qiu Ling in a daze. Hearing him say something that indicated he might not be a full-blooded dragon was surprising enough but it wasn't that hard to imagine either. Even if their alliance wasn't as close as it should be, many dragons would still come into contact with the gods. Not to mention that there were also the spiritual beasts whose territory was part of the dragon realm. A union such as that wasn't too odd.

But asking about demon blood ... that was a different matter altogether. And, frankly, it made her hair stand on end. It wasn't like she didn't trust Qiu Ling but ... it was a lot to take in.

She lowered her gaze and thought about his words again, wondering if she had misunderstood. It didn't seem like it but in this case, it seemed better to ask. Looking up again, she raised her brows. "We are not talking about this as a hypothetical scenario, are we? You are asking because ... this is the case. For you, I mean."

Qiu Ling didn't respond. He hadn't received a response but the way she felt it necessary to inquire and how she hadn't continued to look at him seemed to be answer enough. Just as he had feared, even she wasn't able to accept it if the other part of his was demonic.

Bai Fen sighed. Even if Qiu Ling didn't confirm it, his gaze told her what she wanted to know. "Well, I can't say that I ever would have thought this was the case." She didn't continue immediately, taking a moment to try and digest the news. Finally, she couldn't help but look up at him again. "So, how come?"

Qiu Ling tilted his head, wondering if this was just the calm before the storm. Seeing as she hadn't erupted yet though and he had already started to talk, it didn't seem like a few more words would make much of a difference. "My mother."

He paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and then slowly exhaled. "You wanted to know how Jinde and I are connected. Well, to make a very long story short, he was in love with my father but ... thanks to the interference of the demons, it didn't work out. That interference came in the form of my mother. She ... was in love with demon king Jian Heng and he was the one who asked her to go after my father. It ... worked semi-well, considering they had me and that my father and Jinde went different ways. It also cost both of them their lives.

"As for Jinde, he is a much better person than most. Even with me being another person's child with the one he loves and even knowing about my heritage, he never rejected me. I suppose in his heart, I always counted as his child no matter what."

Bai Fen nodded. "He seemed like it when I met him." She looked at Qiu Ling, her brows slightly furrowed. "Qiu Ling ..." She didn't know how to continue for a while and finally just sighed again. "You are great at surprising people, aren't you? I never saw this coming! Now, you suddenly put it right out there. What am I supposed to do with that?"

Qiu Ling watched her expression closely. "Well, you could tell me whether I still have your blessing to marry your son after he returns. That would be a nice start."

Bai Fen couldn't help herself and laughed out loud. Shaking her head, she finally reached over and pulled him into a half-hug. Looking up at his face, she smiled faintly. "I never cared that you were a dragon instead of a god. If you had been a full-blooded demon, I wouldn't have allowed this. But you're not.

"When it comes to the half-bloods, it depends on fate how they turn out. I might not know what your specific situation is but I do know that you're not as heartless as the demons I've seen and heard of. You love Jing He and you do so deeply. I believe that ... what happened in the last three years and especially in the last few months, has proven just how much. So for me, there is no doubt that you are dragon enough to make my son happy."

Qiu Ling's lips curved up unwittingly and he nodded in a hurry. "I definitely will."

Bai Fen nodded but there was also some concern in her eyes. Letting go of him and stepping back, she gave him a scrutinizing gaze. "You've told me but ... does Jing He know?"

Qiu Ling hesitated. "I ... I tried to tell him. I just wanted to prepare a little longer so we ... only really talked about the situation of the half-bloods."

Bai Fen raised her brows. "You were trying to influence the response you'd be getting."

Qiu Ling could only smile wryly. "Can you blame me? Jing He ... has high expectations. I always knew it would be difficult for him to accept if he found out. I did know that I had to be honest with him before the wedding though. There is just ... no excuse to go into marriage with this kind of secret between us.

"In fact, during the trial, I told his reincarnation. There were also hints slipping through here in the Nine Heavens because I failed to hide something every now and then. I suppose ... by the time he fully remembers, he'll be able to piece it together. I wanted to do it before then. I just never thought I'd fail to get the opportunity."

Bai Fen furrowed her brows. Indeed. With Jing He gone and them being unable to see him for the time being, he would definitely remember before he returned. In fact ... now that she knew about this, she couldn't help but wonder if maybe he already had and the shock this new knowledge about his fiance gave him played a part in his fall.
