Jing He awoke with a start, sitting up and raising his hands at once to check whether everything was still as usual. Around him, everything was still dark, making him panic even further. He took a few ragged breaths and his hands trembled but he finally managed to create a few sparks of light with his magic.
Seeing his unblemished skin, he finally heaved a sigh of relief and rubbed his chest, trying to calm down his racing heart. He didn't have much luck with that and his breathing didn't want to even out either. What he had just experienced in that dream had cut too deep to easily extract himself from it.
All these years since he had fallen in love with Qiu Ling, he had always feared losing his favor. He was afraid that he would do or say something that would make the man he loved look down on him or even downright despise him. Thanks to the trial, he knew now that Qiu Ling couldn't easily leave him but years of worry wouldn't vanish overnight. Especially not if the two of them were currently separated because of his father.
Jing He paused when remembering his father's expression from the dream. It had changed from absolute fury to disgust in a matter of minutes and finally, he hadn't even wanted to acknowledge him any longer, casting him out of his family. Such a future ... was that what awaited him if he insisted on being with Qiu Ling?
His brows furrowed and he slowly lay down again, staring at the ceiling of his bed. He didn't want to give up on his love for Qiu Ling. Especially not after realizing how big of an influence it would have on Qiu Ling as well if it didn't come to fruition. Yes, since Qiu Ling needed him to survive, he naturally couldn't let go of him. Surely, his father had to understand that?
He sighed again, very well aware that his father might not care. When asked, he would likely say that Qiu Ling had brought this upon himself and that he shouldn't have simply bound his soul to him without gaining his approval. Maybe this was right but ... did it even matter? It had already happened and now, Qiu Ling's life was linked to his. How could this simply be ignored?
Jing He turned to the side, brushing over the blanket with his fingertips. In his dream, it had been in this place that he and Qiu Ling ... Well, he didn't even dare to finish that thought. Of course, what they had done shouldn't have happened. Not in that way. Although then again, to know that even for just a moment, he had been fully Qiu Ling's also bestowed great peace to him.
"Oh, Qiu Ling ..." Jing He pressed his eyes shut, seeing his lover's appearance in his mind. If only he was here now. Surely, he would have had the words to reassure him. As things stood, he had to face this alone.
Speaking of alone ... he couldn't help but think of yesterday when he suddenly found Tian at the door to the garden. Right now, he couldn't help but wonder if he had actually just dreamed of that as well. After all, how likely was it that the supreme sovereign would pay him a personal visit? It really didn't seem like something that would truly happen.
Jing He opened his eyes again and slowly sat up, pondering by himself. Even though it seemed odd, he still felt that this wasn't just something he had dreamed up. After all, he still remembered what he had done after that. He even remembered getting up once during the night and being unable to fall back asleep for a long time. During that period, he had been thinking of Qiu Ling, wishing to see him with all his heart. Maybe that was what had caused those messy dreams.
Jing He's cheeks flushed and he swung his legs over the edge of the bed, intending to get up. Even though it was clearly still dark outside, it should already be the early hours of the morning. He would just spend more time to get ready and then maybe read a book. Anyway, if it was true that the supreme sovereign had come to see him yesterday and intended to return today, then he couldn't tarry. Getting up late and not being ready to receive him would not just be discourteous but an insult to him.
Brushing away the bed curtain and standing up, Jing He glanced at the box where An Xin was sleeping. He smiled when he saw the Flame Heart whose fur gave off a faint flow in the darkness like a little lamp. The next moment, he paused.
In the shine from An Xin's fur, he could barely make out the edge of something rectangular. It looked suspiciously like a letter but he was sure that it hadn't been there last night when he went back to sleep.
Jing He blinked his eyes, raised a hand, and ignited a small flame. With his emotions under control again, he didn't have trouble doing so and a warm light soon filled the bedroom. Now, he could be sure that what was lying there was indeed an envelope.
He picked it up, looking at it in a daze. The writing on top ... it looked very much like that of his lover. He hadn't seen it often in the past but he always paid a lot of attention to everything Qiu Ling did so he naturally wouldn't mistake it. So this meant ... Qiu Ling had come by after he fell asleep and delivered this letter?
Why? Or rather ... if he came by, why hadn't he stayed? This thought made Jing He's brows furrow and he hurriedly pulled out the letter from inside, wanting to find out just what it was his lover wanted to tell him.
