"Sophie, quiet down," Mi-Ra said frantically.
The one year old only cried louder.
This led to Chae-Ri and Hyung-Sik crying.
"I've got Claire and Henry," Mi-Ra's mother said quietly. "You take care of Sophie."
Mi-Ra nodded as Mina went to calm the twins.
She picked Soyeon up and held the girl against her. Her phone rang, and Mi-Ra's eyes widened.
She scrambled to grab it and answered it.
"Hello?" she whispered.
"Marie! Want to go to the mall?"
"Um, I can't."
"Why not, girl? We're both thirteen, you said you can go out when you want. And why are you so quiet?"
Soyeon's crying began to get quieter and Mi-Ra let out a small sigh of relief.
"My dad's asleep and I don't want to wake him. And I'm watching the triplets. Maybe some other time."
She could hear the pout in her friend's voice as she agreed before hanging up.
The phone suddenly rang again, startling Mi-Ra. Soyeon began to cry again.
A door was slammed open.
"WHAT THE FUCK?!"
In the doorway stood Choi Kyu-Chul.
"WHY IS THAT MISTAKE CRYING?!"
"It's my fault!" Mi-Ra said quickly. "My friend called and scared her."
Kyu-Chul stalked forward and clapped Mi-Ra in the face.
He went to wrench Soyeon from the older girl, but Mi-Ra pulled her into her and dropped to her knees, curling in on herself to protect the baby.
"Make her shut up!" Kyu-Chul hollered as Mi-Ra shook her head, hugging Soyeon against her.
In anger, Kyu-Chul started to kick the girl and punch her.
Mi-Ra's sobs shook her body as she was pummeled with assaults. Her shaking made Soyeon begin to cry again.
She knew if she gave in and gave her father the baby he would leave her alone, but she would never let anything happen to her siblings.
When her father got bored of hurting her and walked away, Mi-Ra instantly checked if Soyeon was okay.
The baby was looking up at her with big, worried eyes.
Mi-Ra noted with relief she was unharmed.
Unable to move due to the pain, Mi-Ra collapsed on the floor, laying there trembling as she held her sister until her mom found her there.
