I throw him his black tee, being he's shirtless and it would make it clear if she had any suspicion. I walk to my dresser grabbing a pair of pj pants.
"Before we go down I want to forewarn you, My aunt is outspoken, she says anything that comes to her mind" I say nervously standing at the door keeping him from exiting.
"So just like you, got it" he grins giving me a soft push moving me from the door. He walks down the stairs with no sense of nervousness. I mutter a silent no following behind him.
I'm hit with the smell of pancakes as my feet meet the last step. I used to think my aunt's pancakes were top-tier but then I met Mrs. Margot.
"I hope you like pancakes" she says, her eyes on Corbin as she places the last plate setting.
Eggs, pancakes, and perfectly cooked bacon are spread across the plaid cloth. My favorite brand of orange juice sits coldly at the edge of the wooden table.
"He loves pancakes, as do I" I speak for a nervous-looking Corbin. He nods pulling out a chair for me.
Meredith finally sits down giving me the go-ahead to shove the delicious bacon into my mouth.
"What's going on between you two?" She asks breaking the silence. I look to Corbin who has yet to even cut into his pancakes. His hand tightens on my thigh and he speaks.
"I'm her boyfriend" he speaks confidently this time. Her lips grow into a toothy smile, her eyes meet mine then shift back to Corbin.
"Boyfriend huh." She says picking up another piece of pancake. "Yes boyfriend" I reply making it clear.
"How did you two meet?" She continues her questions. I don't even know the answer to this question. I stay quiet.
"Kat threw a water bottle at me while I was playing video games with Draven back in 4th grade. I like to think she meant it for him and not me but who knows with her" he says and they both laugh.
I remember that. I was mad at Draven for ruining our sleepover with their yelling. They're lucky I didn't open it and pour it on the two of them.
"It was certainly meant for you. To be fair you guys were yelling at the top of your lungs while I was trying to paint Ravens nails. You deserved it." I admit.
"It's not my fault you have shaky hands. You'd probably do just as bad if we weren't yelling" he retorts. I immediately bring my hand into a fist slamming it into his arm. Instead of a sound of pain, he laughs.
I break eye contact with him and meet my aunt's gaze. Her eyes glowing with happiness and her lips match the same expression.
"What are your plans after high school?" She asks Corbin and his smile is quickly replaced with a blank look.
I place my hand in his to help his nerves. I know he hates talking about the future especially because I might leave him and go to an out-of-state college.
"I want to go into business" he says blandly looking to me for reassurance. I smile at him and he returns the same.
"Business isn't easy but you look like you'd be toughen to go down that path. Good luck to you." she retorts. His muscles immediately calm next to me.
"Thank you" Corbin remarks.
I eat my last piece of pancake as I'm a slow eater and the last one to finish. I scoot my chair out and bring myself to my feet. I take each of their plates and bring them to the sink.
"She was a demon baby" I hear my aunt say referring to me I'm assuming. I quickly put the last plate into the dishwasher and walk back to the table hoping the embarrassment hasn't gone too far yet.
"I have pictures" she says moving to the bookshelf for the photo albums.
"I don't think he wants to see those" I speak. But she grabs them instead.
"Oh no, I want nothing more darling" he says with a devilish grin. I hate him.
My aunt places the photo albums on the table she grabs a pink and yellow, sticker-filled photo album. I made each of these albums with my aunt.
She took as many photos as I'd let her and would print them out and buy plain albums so we could make them together. It's one of my favorite memories but the photos are far too embarrassing.
"Oh my word, look at this gem" She turns the book to my boyfriend. I sink into my seat as the picture comes into my view.
It's me with purple and blue eyeliner all over my face and arms. I wanted to be just like Meredith back then so I stole her makeup and tried my best at being a beauty guru. As seen in the picture I sucked at it.
"How cute" he looks at me fully pestering me with his gaze.
She flips through the pages before landing on her next page to show and tell. This is beyond embarrassing. I'm mortified as I see her pull out a sheet of lined paper. My first ever poem. It was the start of my writing journey I haven't stopped writing since.
She hands him the sheet and he begins reading as do I. I was obsessed with the color yellow. I got bored one rainy day and decided to write about it.
Yellow, oh yellow, so bright and bold, A color that makes my heart unfold.
Like sunshine on a happy day,
Yellow brings smiles and lights my way. It's like a lemonade stand, oh so sweet, With yellow cups and summer heat.
Yellow ducks swimming in a pond, And yellow stars sparkling beyond.
Yellow crayons, my favorite to use,
Drawing sunflowers and smiling shoes. So let's paint the world with yellow hue, A color that makes dreams come true.
The grammar and spelling mistakes are more than comical. He finally finishes reading and looks at me.
"You were born to be a writer Kat" he speaks in a cute whisper. Blood rushes to my cheeks at his comment.
"She sure was, You know even as a child I couldn't get her to put down that damn pencil" my aunt chimes in making the moment Corbin and I were having disappear.
