We had fallen asleep and I hadn't realized. Dallas's bed was warm and the room was quiet. Both of his arms had been wrapped around me, it was nice and I didn't want to leave him. I woke up around 10:30 and took a mere glance at the clock before groaning and tucking myself more into Dallas's body. I slept longer and longer until it was about 12:30. I woke up and examined the room, the rough floor boards, dirty widow, and peeling wallpaper. My eyes landed on the clock in the far corner of his room. My eyes widened as I looked at the time.
"Dallas." I whispered as I shook his limp body. He laid still and quiet as I kept shaking him. "Dallas!" I quietly yelled as I shook him harder. He groaned as he woke up. His eyes fluttered open as he sat up from the bed. "What?" He asked tiredly as he rubbed his forehead. It was late at night and the room was silent. I pointed to the clock which read 12:37. "Oh." He said in a breath. He yawned and stretched as he began to wake up more. I looked to him with wide eyed confusion. "Oh!" He yelled, his eyes widening. I chuckled as he threw the blanket off of his body.
He hurriedly got up from the bed and started walking to the coat rack by the door. He paused in the middle of the room. "Ya think Darry's gonna be mad?" He asked casually as he looked to me. I sighed. "What do you think?!" I stated with a demanding tone of voice as I rushed out of the bed. I brushed passed him and sped over to the coatrack. I grabbed my denim jacket quickly and started towards the door. "Wait for me!" Dallas yelled as he came rushing behind me.
We quickly sprinted down the stairs, our footsteps were loud. We pushed through a crowd of drunk and crazy people as we headed to the door. I pushed open the door aggressively as I ran out, Dallas followed close behind me. I panted as I ran and ran. I had seen Darry yell at Pony, I didn't exactly want to be in that same situation.
Although, as we got nearer to the the Curtis house, I had thought of my father. He had usually been worse with me and Matilda, especially when he was drunk. I also thought of Darry's situation. I realized how hard it must've been to keep Pony and Soda in place. How hard it must've been to raise his two brothers and have two jobs while only being twenty. I slowed down as I thought more.
I heard Dallas's heavy breathing behind me as he caught up to me. He came to my side as he took deep breaths. "I understand that he's gonna be mad, but Jesus Christ!" He yelled. I chuckled. "Sorry." I apologized. We walked slowly as we both caught our breaths. I stuffed my hands into the pockets of my denim jacket as the cold air hit my body. My teeth chattered in the coolness of the night. My denim jacket hadn't been very heavy and with every passing minute came a chilly breeze. My nose felt numb and my skin felt pale.
"You alright doll?" Dallas asked as he looked over to my shivering body. I let out a small laugh. "Just a little cold." I replied as I shrugged. "Here." He said as he took off his leather jacket. I smiled as her draped it around my shoulders. "Thanks." I said as I adjusted it. "Aren't you gonna be cold." I asked as I looked over to him. His arms were bare. "I'll be fine. I'm tough." He stated as he looked ahead. I laughed at his statement. "You're real funny Dallas." I said as I looked to the ground.
He looked to me with a confused smile. "You think I'm lying?" He asked loudly. I giggled. "I'm tough!" He yelled seriously. I could only smile and laugh as he continued to argue. "I swear!" He yelled. "Alright." I said as I shrugged. "I am!" He shouted. "I know you are, I'm just messing with you." I said as I nudged his shoulder. He sighed as he looked ahead again. "Good." He mumbled.
I got closer to him as we neared the Curtis house. I examined the lot as we passed it. The trees leaves and branches were blowing in the wind and the ground was silent. I looked over to the grassy area and trembled. I thought of the night with Bob. I had always thought of it, ever time I'd pass by the lot. I knew I'd have to deal with that for a long time. The image of blood and scars burned into my mind. I took a deep breath as I calmed myself.
I stared at the quiet lot for awhile in fear, my body shook with every image that flashed in my mind. As I shook more, Dallas suddenly grabbed my hand. I looked up to him with confusion. He gripped it tighter as I stared at him, signaling that it was okay. I took in a deep, quivering breath as I calmed down.
