Tuesday morning and at last Gelan had allowed Shen Wei to return to the university. He had only been absent for a short time but it felt twice as long as it actually was, and he was eager to organise his classes to make up for the disturbance in his pupils routine. Gelan had only agreed with the provision that he wore a smart watch and would alert her to a change in his condition giving her the chance to inform Yunlan who would be able to help him.

He walked to work and enjoyed the fresh air and exercise, feeling very much better than the last time he had gone down this road, and arrived on time at his study, where he boiled the kettle for some tea before class. The principal called in for a quick chat to check that he was well enough to return and left before the first classes commenced.

Chu and Daqing were in a better working mood this morning and covered a great deal of research into the office records, feeling as if they were getting somewhere at last. Chu could link the last journal entry in Yunlan's journal to an input in the records about an incident in the shopping mall but he hadn't read it yet, because he was short of time.

Yunlan's morning had been a little different from the start. After his alarm went off, he pounced on it reluctantly to rise and opened his tired eyes. He stared and thought that he could see shapes, indistinguishable but definitely shapes. Nothing clear, it was all inside a mist but the shapes moved when it was a person and he followed the movement with his eyes. He had never actually seen his staff at home, he knew them by the sound they made when they walked and their voices. So to see their shapes was amazing but they didn't seem to notice that he was watching them except for his nurse, who stopped dead when she realised, and swayed backwards and forwards without talking, just to check.

She took him to her medical room and sat him down to test his eyesight,

"When did you notice the change, any pain or discomfort? Follow my finger, and then watch this light."

Ava waved her finger one way and another, changing directions while watching Yunlan's eyes follow every move. She then shone the torch briefly at his eyes in different angles to watch his pupils reacting to the strong light and sat still and just stared.

"When did it start, and what can you see?"

"When I woke up this morning, and I can see blurred shapes but everything is in black and white I'm guessing because I don't know what colour is. I have no pain or discomfort, it was a bit of a surprise, I still recognise people by their voice but now I'm seeing a shape to match."

"Yunlan, you Know that this is impossible but it's happening, so I don't know if it's temporary or not. Just accept it as a gift and enjoy the experience."

The nurse was a practical person and if Yunlan didn't want to know the why's, she never pushed him into finding out unless it was life threatening, and his eyesight returning, in her eyes, was indeed a gift even if it was only temporary.
