Hellion (n)
A rowdy or mischievous person
Cherie's POV
My legs burn and ache as we try our best to escape.
"Go back to the wall!" I yell out, needing her to not misunderstand a word so we can escape.
She holds my hand, pulling me forward. Her feet are a little quicker than mine.
We turn, running down a thin alley. Homes are on both sides of us and it only makes me think about how out there, homes aren't this close together. There is room for gardens or leisure but here everything is so jam packed. It's suffocating.
"Shit," Rabiah gasps.
Guards appear at the end of the alley, walking straight ahead without noticing us.
We crouch down. Nothing can hide us but being low to the ground in the dark should help keep us hidden.
I hold my hand over my mouth as insurance, just in case my body decides to betray me and get the hiccups at a very unfortunate time.
Rabiah looks ahead with sweat on her brow and teeth sinking into her bottom lip. I've never seen her worried before, it's quite unsettling considering how courageous she is.
In the past, she's saved me and now it's my turn to deliver. If I don't return her to Bakkhos and Keely, they'd be destroyed.
"Rabiah," I whisper, grabbing her attention. She doesn't hear me or she's frozen in fear, feeling surrounded by danger at all angles. "Rabiah, look at me," I pull her face with my hand and hold her head in place by her cheeks, "we are going to make it out of here."
Her cheeks squish into my palms as she nods.
We stay low to the ground and watch the guards run towards the church. We aren't far from it so we need to get out of here soon.
"There's only a few more, when I say go, we run as fast as we can," Rabiah turns to me, "do not let go of my hand."
I nod and wait for her command.
Her fingers grip around my fingers, silently telling me to prepare myself to get dragged.
She yanks me forward after the last man passes. We run on our toes like hellions with bags full of jewels.
"Over there!" A guard yells as we get mere feet away from the walls.
I take the lead, pulling her hand forwards and up to the hole.
"You go first," she instructs me, wafting her hands towards the hole quickly. She looks back, watching the King's guards run our way.
I wiggle my way through the hole, my clothes almost catching on the rough sides. If I were wearing a dress, it would've ripped.
Looking back, I wait for Rabiah to wiggle through.
Come on, come on. You were right behind me.
I quickly grow worried as I don't even see a hand reach through.
I have to go back in there.
My legs shake as I kneel back down. I'm horrified of what I will see on the other side.
With a racing heart, I crawl through the broken wall and spot Rabiah in an instant.
