Gormless (adj)
Lacking intelligence and vitality
Malachi's POV
My armor clanks together as I try to quietly get dressed for the day. I try to be careful so I don't wake up Aimee or Amias but it's especially hard when my uniform is made of loud material in some places. Like my chest piece, knee and shin bracers, and my forearm bracers.
"I'll go make you your morning tea and some food," my lovely wife serenely tells me as soon as she opens her eyes.
I hate waking her up, I wish she would sleep. Sleep in even extra on her days off which she doesn't get many. None of us do. Everyone has a job, a role to fill.
"Please, sleep in some," I suggest, grabbing her waist as she steps out of bed. Her skin is still warm from being under the quilt her mother made for us when we got married. Her mother is who taught her how to mend clothes and that's why King Cassius gave her that job.
"I much rather bless you with hot tea and a belly full of food," she kisses my cheek before stepping away from me.
As I finish getting ready, I hear Amias' little feet shuffling around on the wooden floor. He's probably looking for his mother, big momma's boy.
He's gotten closer to her since Cherie has left. He speaks of her a lot, we know he misses her as much as we do.
"Come here, son," I tell him.
His round brown eyes look up at me as he sheepishly makes his way towards me.
"You're not in trouble," I chuckle, "how did you sleep?"
He smiles, falling into my arms, "I had a dream that God gave us a dog. I think that means it's within his grace and we should get one."
I laugh, "you think so?"
His head eagerly nods.
His small body is lifted into my arms, "we will see," I tell him. I can't say no to those big brown eyes right now. He doesn't even understand that there is about to be a war. At least he's not old enough to fight in it. I won't have to worry about him perishing.
I bring him to the table where we have family meals. Minus one family member we miss terribly.
It was such a shock when she showed up that day. I never expected to see her again. I was in the process of mourning her death, we all were. Every night Aimee and I would cry to each other, wondering what we could've done differently or how different our prayers would've been if we knew that this would happen.
Food already sits out on the table. Bread with preserves. Simple but delicious.
Amias greedily digs in, grabbing a slice of bread and drowning it in the blackberry preserves.
"Your tea, my love," Aimee hands me a steaming cup of hot tea to go with my breakfast.
She disappears into the kitchen and returns with a cup of tea for herself before she sits at the table across from me.
Such beauty can never be matched. Even with sleep still in her eyes she's stunning.
"Do you work today?" I probe.
Her head shakes as she spreads preserves onto her bread that now comes from a half full jar.
"King Cassius has been insufferable for the past few days. He's so on edge."
