17. Her nervousness is cute.

Raw awkwardness was hanging around in the atmosphere. With Rayne looking down at her feet and Alec trying so hard not to keep his eyes on her, the silence grew even more.

'Umhm...uhm.'

The sound echoed as Alec broke the silence by clearing his throat.

Rayne looked up, with the superlative form of pink like shade of blush on her pale cheeks. She was embarrassed, and this was not hidden.

"Why did you pick a cactus?", he asked.

"Umm...because...", she trailed it off until Alec paused her .

"Because?", he gushed. " Just answer, Rayne."

"Promise me you won't get mad."

"I never get mad at anyone. Just tell me."

"Yeah, I have seen that", she muttered silently under her breath, remembering the events of the party.

" What did you say?", he asked .

"Nothing!", she quickly diffused it.

"So...why did you buy that cactus for me? ", he rubbed the question again .

"Because...you are like a cactus.", she was awfully nervous and her words were so meaningless that they made Alec laugh.

"I am like a cactus? ", he raised his eyebrows.

"No. A cute cactus. No...no. You are not a cactus. It's not like you resemble one because obviously you are not green and you don't have thorns. I am not saying that you are a Xerophyte that lives in a deserted area. I just picked it because it needs less care and water", she rambled on and stopped when Alec asked something.

"So you are saying I am careless?"

"Y-No! Of course not. "

"Then?"

"Nothing. You are a prick like it -No! You are not a prick. What am I saying? "

"Haha...whatever it is. It is interesting. Now, I won't let you go unless I get a satisfactory answer."
He laughed and locked the door.

"That was the answer. I'll just go now." She scurried towards the door to unlock it .

"Uh uh. Not so fast", he quickly grabbed her hand to halt the action.

Her hands were so soft to feel that he didn't want to let go of them. But Rayne snatched them away .

"So ...?", he stretched the 'o' very long .

"Well, I was just passing through the streets when I found a lady selling flowers. So, I just bought a cactus because it was so unique and different. Just like you, I mean not like you. Not in the sense that you resemble it or something. Because you don't. I had no idea what to give you as a thank you gift. I know it is ...-" she rambled again and this time, he put his index finger on her soft plum lips just to stop her .

"So you ramble when you are nervous?" He smiled and moved closer.

"No. I just don't ramble. I say stupidest things of all times. You know what people say, the universe is made up of two major things and one of them is stupidity. I am a little stupid, not a big stupid like Chasit- I mean ...um...we should...I-" she almost blurted out that Chasity is stupid.

"So you do ramble " he laughed at her nervousness. It was so adorable and cute.

He hadn't had such a good laugh in a long time. So this really made an exception.

Moreover, nobody knew his birthday and birthday gift-giving was farther than possible. So a thank-you gift was very new for him. It did made him feel happy and cared for.

Rayne's cheeks were no less than a tomato.

He couldn't help but adore her and her thoughtfulness.

"Alec! Babe! Come down to eat!",a knock on the door accompanied by Chasity's high pitched voice disturbed them.

"Yeah! Coming!"

"C'mon Rayne " he said while grabbing Rayne's hand again.

She didn't move from her place and Alec stared at her dumbly.

"I don't usually go down to eat. Chasity don't -"

"Yeah so? "

"I don't go down-"

Again cutting off he said, "Today is exception day. You will have to come .I won't eat without you."

Before she could protest he literally dragged her down.
