The sky tells a story of sadness, glooming so dark and gray above us as i hope this isn't a precursor of what we are to find right inside this building. Our car doors shut with a thud, our shoes crunching against the gravel beneath us. The wind lies so still the noises of our presence sticks out starkly against the silence of the city scape.
"Ready?" Asks Zeke, shoving a pocket knife deeply in his pocket.
"Yep." I bite my cheek throwing my bag over my back, the gun i stole from the police station knocking against it. I've kept it so well hidden no one in the group even knows of it's presence. Let alone that i take it with us every time we travel somewhere unfamiliar. All other times, it is shoved between mattresses put away for safe keeping
We approach a set of boarded up boarded up doors, leaving me to believe people have been here. We travel around the property searching for an entrance to the building. Eventually I spot a window and start to climb through, careful not to snag myself on the protruding glass.
Making our way carefully down the dark and dingy hallways we look for any signs of life. We enter every room as a group taking precaution as we have no idea what to expect. I swing open the door to a huge board room covered with desks and chairs sprawled out in disarray. I sigh throwing myself into one of the rolling chairs tired of searching.
"There's nothing fucking here." i'm so frustrated i can feel the tears begging to fall. I really thought i was right, i really thought this would be our answer. I hoped and prayed we weren't alone but i guess there is no one left to answer my prayers.
"We haven't gone through every where, let's keep searching." Zeke says trying to keep things positive but honestly, i'm not having it.
"Yeah, no there's definitely people here Zeke!!" I yell throwing my arms up in reference to the barren building we have searched through.
"Damn it June would you just give it a chance?" Tom says to me bitterly, wishing i would not be so pessimistic about everything. I roll my eyes in response to his attitude, but sink down in the chair when i see the look he gives me. I know that look, it's the look he gave me while beating me. I shut my mouth immediately not wanting to draw our friends attention.
"Come on, let's just go look." Mia takes my hand gently, trying to keep me in a good mood.
Suddenly, a crunching noise is heard outside the room and all of our movement stops. A few moments of silence pass as we wait to see if any other sounds appear. Just as i am about to move again, i hear a faint clanking noise.
"What the fuck?" Mouths Zeke from across the room careful to not let anything hear us. I raise my finger to my lips signifying the others to be quiet. Taking my backpack from it's place on my back, i drop it into Tom's hands and unzip it very very slowly. All eyes are on me as i pull the shiny silver revolver from my bag.
"Holy shit." Escapes Tom's lips in a whisper at the sight of me toting around a gun. Motioning my head for them to follow me, i meticulously place each foot on the floor careful not to disturb the silence. My head peaks slightly around the door way before i turn my whole body out into the hall.
Sensing movement, i draw my gun pulling the hammer back with a click. I am met with the big blue eyes of a tall blonde boy, a short African American girl with long dark hair hides behind him. Holy shit.
Their faces in complete and utter shock at the barrel of my gun pointed towards them. I draw in a sharp breath seeing other people for the first time. Lowering my gun to the ground i ask
"Who are you?"
"Who are we? Who are YOU?" asks the girl boldly but still hiding behind him, making me giggle.
"Guys!?" A few other people jog down the large hallway calling out to their friends ensuring their safety. Holy fucking shit, so many people. I can't believe my eyes, i am just so fucking relieved.
My friends peak their heads out of the door frame they once hid behind. Hearing voices and foot steps their curiosity couldn't wait for me to give the okay.
"More people." Says the first blonde boy still out of breath from having a gun pointed at his perfectly chiseled face.
