"First off, we don't do guns here." Says the slender brunette lady her eyes burning into me. She throws the gun off to the side in a clatter. I cant help but to grit my teeth in a smirk at her superfluous actions. I understand we are new comers here, strangers, but isn't this a little much... i can't help but to wonder. It's almost as if she's putting on a show, displaying her authority.
We are seated in a small room, men blocking the exits with their large bodies. The lady talks to us as if we are children, beneath her. Something about the smugness of her demeanor reminds me of my old professor who refused to let anyone come to class just a minute late.
"Sorry, I didn't know..." i apologize insincerely. I know she can sense the tone in my voice and read my expression. She doesn't seem to be impressed by my attitude and i'm glad.
"What is this place?" asks Zeke as he refuses to deal with any more pleasantries
She sighs looking around to the other older people in the room, they seem to be in their forties maybe fifties. A collective group standing united as one, only the one lady speaking. I think the age difference has taken away some much needed respect.
"You can't expect me to possibly believe you don't know what this is... that you just stumbled in here... accidentally." She shrugs her arms up gesturing at the room. God her pretentiousness is really starting to get on my last fucking nerve.
"I used to go to the hospital here, we know it's for NDEs that why we came here." Mia says very forth coming with our information. I can't help but to sigh at her willingness to help, even if it towards the wrong people.
"What do you know?" She says staring us down. Our eyes gaze collectively meeting amongst each other.
"What do you know!?" She slams her palms on the big wooden table making all of us jump in our chairs.
"We all have had NDE's so it has to correlate some how. Why would we not go to the place where they're studied?" i ask bitterly, and very condescendingly.
"That's all you know?" she scoffs at me
"Also that demon that is chasing us." adds Mia softly, my eyes turning to her, pleading her to not say any more than she already has.
"You've seen him? Has he talked to you?"
"Well yeah..." i dart my eyes around "Killed one of us a few weeks ago."
Her eyes dart to my cohorts trying to read their faces to see if i am lying. But to her dismay i am fully telling the truth. A few brief moments have passed as the brunette woman stands with her hand on her mouth in contemplation
"Is that how you got..?" she gestures to the bruises and gash streaked across my face with a pen in her hand
"Mmm. Mhm." i murmur with a nod.
"Fascinating..." The shock on her face tells me my experience was not a common one.
"Do you know anything else about him?" she asks chewing her bottom lip seemingly thirsting for more information
"I know he is... death." collective gasps are heard around the room making my cheeks turn red and hot. I wish i hadn't spoken out loud so easily now, i should have just let Zeke handle this. I always get embarrassed speaking in crowds, i was just so annoyed at the way she felt the need to talk to us. I wanted to feel like i knew something she didn't.
"How do you know that?" She asks her eyes widening in shock as she approaches me
I shrug my shoulders, i honestly don't even know how i know that. I simply just took a wild guess after adding up all the chain of events. But by the noise that just escaped her lips, i know i've never been more right.
"Guessed. Added everything up and it made sense." i murmur under my breath hoping others won't hear my sense of fluster.
"Incredible." She says on her knees in front of me, lowering her body down so her eyes can meet mine.
