I stood still, watching him as he retreated. I couldn't handle this anymore; it was far from funny, and I wasn't supposed to feel this way. The fear was overwhelming, and I felt like I couldn't breathe. I didn't know what awaited me in this place, whether it would be worse than my previous home, or if the people in this house would eventually treat me as worthless, just like before. I wanted to trust this family, the man who welcomed me as a stranger, and the one who saved me from being sold to a terrible fate. But the memories of the past were haunting me – the men who had pretended to be kind and then turned into monsters, abusing me until I felt like a dead body. My heart ached for my child, Zee. I needed him with me; he was my source of comfort with his infectious smile and warm hugs. Anxiety crept through me, and I started to shake uncontrollably, struggling to breathe. It was as though I couldn't escape this feeling of suffocation. But I knew I couldn't break down so easily. I had to focus on the basics – inhale and exhale – and I would be okay.

I managed to calm myself down and checked the time; it was already 7 in the morning. I changed into the beautiful saree that Maa had given me, adorned with all the traditional ornaments. The only issue was the backless blouse, which exposed the scars on my back through the jewellery. However, the vibrant yellow colour of the saree gave off a cheerful vibe that lifted my spirits. I couldn't bring myself to touch my hair after what had happened yesterday, so I left it open. With a quick application of sindoor in my hair partition, I put on my toe rings, matha patti, and wedding bangles that still adorned my wrists. To complete the look, I added the bangles Maa gave me with this saree. Ready to leave the room, I had a nagging feeling that something was missing. After a moment of thought, I realised it was my anklets. I began searching for them, and finally, after what felt like an eternity, I found them. I bent down to wear the anklets, which created a beautiful tinkling sound with each step. With my accessories in place, I swiftly packed up all my belongings, tidied up his room, and removed any traces that indicated I had been there.
