[Y/n's PoV]
As evening came and the sun settled in the dark blue sky, everyone had mostly left the office by this point.
I thought about Ningguang's words and even though I was still hesitant about her, I decided to have a conversation with her tonight to settle things out.
I quickly washed my face, made up my mind, and made my way over to Ningguang's office. She said that it would be empty tonight— this was the perfect opportunity for some answers.
The empty hallways were dark with only the few dim light bulbs flickering. I felt as if I was making a trip into the unknown as I made my way past the offices.
Finally, I reached her office, and my thoughts became tense as I stood in front of her room.
Do I knock? That was always the question, but I decide against it. Perhaps I could just make a surprise entry and catch her unprepared.
But even so, I'm still a lawyer and must maintain my professionalism at all costs so I decided to knock and wait.
It was eerily quiet for a few moments, but then I heard the shuffling over behind the door.
“Come in,” came Ningguang's voice, sounding calm as ever.
When I opened the door, she sat behind a large desk with all the lights switched on. Her office was organized and tidy, not even a single spec of dust was present. She gestured me to come inside as she crossed her legs, looking at me with a small smirk.
“Don't. even. think about it. I merely come here to seek answers.” I stated.
Ningguang smirked at my reply, “Answer about what? The fact that you still haven’t let go of your resentment?”
She shifted in her chair, folding her hands over her thighs with a self-satisfied smirk.
Ugh, I really hate it when she keeps using that same expression over and over again to me.
“Don’t get me wrong, I understand why you’re still sore over the case.”
“But you have to know that these things happen in court.” she said, letting out a sigh.
“Maybe it’s the fact that you finally met someone who’s more skilled than you. What a shame.”
I clenched my fist.
“No, what I don't understand is that on why are you taking extra measures on defending your client when they are literally the real culprit?! Are they paying you with that high amount of money that you decided to turn a blind eye on what's right or wrong?! This isn't justice at all!”
Even with my outburst, Ningguang just chuckled softly.
“You mean to ask me if I let your client off the hook just because they were well-off?”
“Perhaps some lawyers you know are just as you described. For them, the price is what motivates them to provide a solid case for their clients. But that's not why I'm here today.”
She then shifted even more in her chair, “There's a simple reason why I defended my client. Can you guess why?”
“....”
She... N-no way...
I then realized what her true intentions were, and it is to irritate me until I lose my cool on the court. That's what victory truly means for her.
“You...”
Ningguang let out another soft chuckle, “You're catching on. I only defended them because I wanted to see you crumble beneath me. I wanted to knock you down a peg as well.”
