Victoria laid on the exam table at the hospital. She felt so exposed on this table with her legs up in stirrups. The only thing hiding the view of her from anyone walking in was a thin, paper blanket covering her bottom half.
Steve stood beside her with one hand in hers while Bucky sat in a wheelchair holding her other hand. He was already getting feeling back in his legs, but he wasn't allowed to start walking yet. He wanted to protest, insist he could get up and walk, and get out of this hospital, but he knew he had more than himself to think of. He had Victoria and their baby to look after. He couldn't risk hindering his healing in any way if it could affect them. So, he was listening and sitting in the wheelchair at all times, even letting Steve help him get up.
The doctor came in, a little surprised to see two men beside her. But she didn't question it, for now. "Good afternoon, Ms. Alvarez. How are you feeling?" She asked kindly.
Victoria had to hide a laugh. "I was shot in the chest, and my fiance almost died." She answered flatly, but Steve swatted her arm. With a sigh, Victoria tried again. "Sorry, sorry. I'm okay. No nausea, just a few cravings." She answered a little kinder.
Bucky brought her hand to his lips, kissing her soft knuckles. "We'll get you pizza on the way home, okay?" He said kindly. He was being released today, as long as he agreed not to get up and do a lot of walking for at least another week.
The doctor laughed lightly, setting up everything she needed to do to do her exam. "That's perfectly normal. Don't expect the nausea not to come. Maybe it's just a little late. Is this your first pregnancy?" She asked.
Bucky, Victoria, and Steve's face fell at that. The memory of Sarah burning in their minds. Victoria couldn't even wipe her eyes that started to gloss over, not without dropping one of her guys' hands, which she refused to do.
Steve took over, wiping the tears from her eyes with his thumb. "No, second pregnancy. She went into early labor with the last one." He explained as calmly as he could.
The doctor nodded in understanding, rubbing Victoria's knee lightly. "We're going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen again. Since we know you're a high-risk pregnancy, we have precautions we can take to keep you both safe." She reassured Victoria sweetly.
Victoria nodded, feeling herself tearing up again. Bucky gently wiped away her tears on one side while Steve did the same on the other side. "Hey, it's going to be okay." Steve promised her.
Victoria huffed, pulling her hands out of both of their hands to wipe the tears that wouldn't stop. "You can't know that. I was shot! I let myself get shot." She said.
Bucky growled from deep within his chest at that. "No, you didn't. I let you get shot, and I didn't protect you. Don't you dare put that on yourself. If something happens to this baby, it's on me." He said sternly.
Steve glared at Bucky, his hand rubbing along Victoria's side while she worked to calm down. "You saved her life, Buck. Don't put that on you. These things happen in our line of work." He corrected. Honestly, he blamed himself more than he could ever blame Bucky. He knew he shouldn't have let her go at all. He knew he should've left her at the compound. But he was equally scared that it was another trap and she'd be taken.
The doctor cleared her throat, gaining everyone's attention. "It's nobodies fault. We'll check on the baby now and go from there." She said loud enough to stop their bickering. "But I'd suggest no more dangerous jobs." She said much more sweetly to Victoria, who happily nodded in agreement.
Bucky lifted her shirt, laying his hand on her stomach. "So is this where you put the cold gel on? Can I do it?" He asked enthusiastically.
The doctor let out a small laugh, shaking her head no while she prepared the probe. "She's far too early for an abdominal ultrasound." She explained.
Victoria took the guys' hands back, squeezing their hands when the doctor stuck the probe in her. All three were dead silent while they waited. The small heartbeat finally filled the quiet space after a few minutes. "Oh my God, it's real." She cried out. She was so scared she'd caused them to lose another baby by being shot, hearing the heartbeat solidified everything for her.
Steve leaned down, kissing her lightly on the lips. "I love you, Vic." He said happily. He broke the kiss but kept her hand in his while she turned and let Bucky pull her into a kiss as well. "I love you." He said when he'd broken their kiss.
The doctor measured the baby, deciding the original guess was wrong. She was closer to 8 weeks than to what would have been 6. Either way, a baby was on the way, and both Bucky and Steve vowed to never leave her side. Victoria kept ahold of her guy's hands, but her eyes fixed on the monitor showing the small baby growing in her.
