My name is Kim Mingyu. I'm a successful twenty-seven year old businessman, the founder of my own jewelry company, 'Les Carats,' and the co-CEO of my father's company.
I was supposed to get engaged to my ex-girlfriend of three years, Kang Hyerin. My father was quite happy about me marrying his colleague's daughter, but in the end, I broke off my relationship and engagement with her three months ago. He wasn't quite happy about it, I must say, but it's also my fault for misleading all of them. I realized now that what I feel for Hyerin is not maddening love, but the love and respect I have for our friendship, thinking that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.
The news pretty much devastated her. She couldn't believe that I was actually breaking off our relationship and engagement. Thus, I understand her decision to terminate our company contract before the deadline, even if the company suffered a major loss from it. I would've supported her decision if she also wanted to break our friendship. But she didn't. Even though our dynamics have now changed, we still keep in contact. She's having a hard time processing this sudden disaster that I caused, but I'm glad that we still kept our friendship.
Last week, a woman named Lee Haewon contacted our company, saying that she's the manager of the scandalous model/actress Do Do-hee. If I recall correctly, she went into a five-month hiatus because of a scandal. I must say, I haven't heard a good thing about her yet. Even though she has such a tarnished and bad reputation, she's still on top of the industry and has a huge fan base, even larger than Hyerin's. Her modeling skills and acting are really top-notch.
But the types of scandals she gets herself into are quite outrageous. So, when her manager told me that they want her to be the next face of 'Les Carats,' I immediately wanted to decline. However, Wonwoo hyung, my secretary and one of my closest friends, stopped me.
"Ms. Do Do-hee does have a bad reputation, but she's a professional who's perfect at her job, that we must agree on. The company suffered a huge loss from Ms. Hyerin terminating the contract, but Do Do-hee is the new icon. I think it would be beneficial for us to have her as the new face. We might be able to recover the losses," Wonwoo said in a calm manner to help me understand the benefits we might get from having her.
"But don't you realize that she's a troublemaker who constantly gets herself into scandals? If we have her sign the contract with us, then in the future we might also get in trouble whenever she gets into such scandals. At that point, the company might go bankrupt," I said, giving my reasons for being against this idea.
"We'll negotiate with her. We'll make sure she understands that we mean serious business. If any of her scandals damage our reputation, she needs to pay a large fine."
I listened to his proposal carefully and approved it. "Fine, then. Let her manager know that they should come next Monday at 10 am and meet me at my office. If she's late even by a minute, cancel her appointment. I don't have time for her chit-chats," I said in a serious tone. The next Monday, after I finished my paperwork, at exactly 10 am, Ms. Do Do-hee and her manager Ms. Lee Haewon entered my office, followed by Wonwoo. After signing the last document, I stood up from my chair and went towards the middle of the room where they both were standing.
"Let's deal with it now," I thought as I approached them. Not gonna lie, I can see how much she suits her job and might be perfect for my new jewelry launch. But let's see first if she deserves to be my partner or not. "I'm Kim Mingyu, CEO of 'Les Carats.' It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Do Do-hee," I said while extending my hand for a handshake.
'You better be worth my time, Do Do-hee.'
