I felt Do-hee's stare and gave her a blank smile, noticing her perplexed expression. She seemed confused about how I got the information first. Well, getting Ms. Sara to retract her accusation wasn't easy. As the reporters murmured, I took the mic and spoke, "I think since we have evidence proving Ms. Do-hee's innocence, there shouldn't be any more questions about the scandals. Regarding why she didn't clear the allegations, it's because Ms. Sara has a disabled mother who needs proper care. Ms. Do-hee was kind enough not to press charges, considering her mother's situation."
All eyes were on Do-hee, waiting for her confirmation.
"Yes... Yes. I'm happy to know that she took all her claims back, even though I don't know how... But anyways, all's well that ends well," Do-hee replied awkwardly.
The reporters seemed satisfied with this answer, typing furiously on their devices and updating their news websites with Sara's statement. The atmosphere of the press conference changed. Everyone was excited about the positive news of Do-hee's scandals being cleared. People were ready to accept her as the face of Les Carats. It was finally the end of all the scandals and negative news surrounding her. And that was exactly what I needed.
I knew this topic would resurface today. That's why I asked Wonwoo hyung to gather all the information about Park Sara. I wanted to see who was telling the truth, as I didn't believe Do-hee's reason for not pressing charges. We discovered that Sara had changed her identity and moved to the city to escape her past, where she had been evicted as a thief. Her mother was indeed disabled, but Sara made the allegations out of revenge when Do-hee didn't keep her on.
I had to pay Sara 10 million Won to make her write the statement. She didn't care about her disabled mother once she got the money. Wonwoo hyung should be at her door with the police now, pressing charges for defamation and damaging our reputation.
Finally, the conference ended. I stood up, bowed to the journalists, and walked out, not caring whether Do-hee was following me. I was exhausted from all the extra work I did for her. This had been a tense press conference, and the media attention was too high. I wouldn't have done all those things if she had just pressed charges. Suddenly, I heard her calling my name from behind.
"Mr. Mingyu!" She and her manager were trying to keep up with me. I stared at her stoically.
"How... How did you know about Sara's statement? She's not someone who would retract without any reason."
I gave her a cold expression. "You are right. She wouldn't have taken back her statement for no reason. I had to pay her a lot to do it. But I didn't want your past to ruin this opportunity, so I did what I had to do."
"What? You paid?! What about her mother then?! I told you I didn't want to make her suffer!"
I scoffed at her reply. "Oh, please. You and I both know you said that for your own benefit. If I hadn't paid her, you would have been in a lot of trouble. She is not important to your life, so I don't see why her suffering should matter to you so much. You need to think about yourself first, and paying her was the right decision."
"Such a calculative person you are," she scoffed.
'Did I just hear her scoff? I saved her from getting defamed again, and instead of thanking me, she's calling me calculative?'
"Well, at least I'm not petty like you, who can't even spend some money for her own good. If you had just paid to let the truth come out, none of this would've happened. Instead of calling the person who helped you calculative, you should learn how to thank someone. Call me whatever you want. I made the right choice. I had to clear your past for you to be the ambassador. I didn't do this out of sympathy. I did this for the sake of business. Do you understand that? You have to understand that I am not your friend. You are just the brand ambassador of Les Carats in the end."
