Once Steve, Dustin and I finally tracked down Nancy and Jonathan, we ended up using a fire extinguisher to break through a wall.

Inside, Nancy and Jonathan stood on the hardened goo. The couple were wide-eyed before relieved smiles appeared on their faces.

"Sorry we're late." Steve began.

"I heard my children were in trouble." I added, reaching my hand in the hole to get them moving. "Don't worry...Mommy's here."

They laughed and Nancy grabbed my hand as I helped her out first.

The second she was free, I hugged her tightly. "You alright?"

"Yeah." Nancy nodded. "Yeah, we're good."

Before I could say anything else, my brother's grubby little hands tugged me away from Nancy so he could hug her himself.

Steve helped Jonathan out next and I immediately hugged him, too.

"Thanks." Jonathan told Steve as he accepted my hug.

"You guys sure you're okay? Might've even been worse than what we went through." I pulled back and looked between them.

"We're okay." Jonathan confirmed with a nod.

Dustin pulled away from Nancy and furrowed his eyebrows. "Was that weird? I'm sorry. That was weird. I didn't...we just...we all thought-"

"We were goners." Nancy finished. "Yeah, we did, too."

"Turns out that shield generator of yours-" Jonathan began.

"Isn't really a shield generator. Yeah, we know." Steve cut in.

Nancy's eyes narrowed. "Well, you'd think that would have been good information to share."

"We tried." I raised the busted walkie. "Antenna snapped."

Steve and Dustin both pointed at each other. "His fault."

"Both of their faults." I corrected.

"Okay, so then what the hell did I shoot?" Nancy asked.

"Exotic matter." Dustin answered.

Jonathan blinked before raising his eyebrows. "And we're supposed to know what that is?"

"Dustin and I found Brenner's journal." I explained as Dustin opened the book to show them the notes and drawings.

"It's from '83. and this thing is a gold mine. All his research into the gate, how he created it, what it really is. I'm still deciphering it, but-" Dustin continued.

"Yeah, this shit will fry your brain." Steve muttered.

"Cliff notes, Holly isn't on the other side of the wall." Dustin revealed.

Nancy looked taken aback. "Then where is she?"

I sighed as the answer still felt like a mystery. "Not sure. But wherever she is...it's not the Upside Down."

-

Nancy wanted to see the journal herself, so she and Jonathan began flipping through the pages. Suddenly, our heads snapped up at the distant sound of an echoing scream.

Nancy stood straight. "What was that?"

"What was what?" Steve blinked.

"I heard it, too." I whispered as I scanned the area for anything unusual.

"Holly." Nancy realized as she turned and ran down the hallway. I took off right after her as the boys stumbled to keep up.

We made it onto the roof of the lab and froze as we noticed Holly floating above us like a puppet on a string.
