Slash's breathing was shallow as (Y/n) looked him over. His severed arm was hastily reconnected with a blanket wrapped around the pieces, sockets screwed up in pain, attached hand balled up in the sheets under him, and he let out quiet groans. It broke her heart. All of his various scratches and minor injuries were healed by the others, but now that (Y/n) had refueled her magic with rest, she took his care into her own hands.

She unwound the blanket from his humerus, examining the limp lower half of his arm for damage. It was mostly intact, the slash Killer severed it with a clean slice, so she held the broken end against the top half of his humerus so it was perfectly lined up then placed her other hand over the break. Green magic lit up her hand as she concentrated on the healing spell, and Slash's teeth grit tightly as the bones rejoined. When the green faded away, she gently tilted his arm to check for any imperfections. His hand flexed, and she tapped his fingers and watched him flinch. No problems there.

"Thank you for healing Slash," a kind voice said from behind her, making her glance towards the doorway to the master bedroom. Dream. His hands were clasped behind his back, no sign of any residual anger on his calm face, but his eyelights glowed worriedly.

(Y/n) looked him over briefly before returning her attention to the younger demon. "Are you alright?"

"I was perhaps the only one not injured in the fight," he said, a soft chuckle slipping from his teeth as he walked over to stand beside her. She rounded the bed to Slash's other side in response, and his browbones drew together as his gaze followed her. She gently tilted Slash's skull in her hands to check for injuries, drawing a quiet whimper from him. Her fingers brushed across his forehead in thought, her thoughts no doubt loud as she debated what else she could do for him.

"Can you not hear me, summoner?"

She didn't look up at Dream's words, muttering, "Your mind has been quiet since yesterday." Her hands ran down Slash's body to check for other injuries. She'd done this a number of times to Dance, and her skilled fingers efficiently felt up his bones as her (e/c) eyes watched for any changes in behavior.

"Yours has been equally silent." A pause. "Do you not want me to hear your thoughts?"

"[I want you to hear me.]" She glanced up at Dream, but he just tilted his head at her. "You can't hear me?"

"Evidently not," he mumbled with a soft sigh. He studied her as his golden eyelights swirled with his thoughts, but once again she couldn't get a read on him. There might as well have been a wall between them—she'd be able to read his expression just as well, anyway. "May I try something?" He stepped toward her again, and while she knew he could feel her distrust, she didn't back away this time.

"What?"

"Let me see your soul, please." He held out his cupped gloved hands, his white soul appearing over them, and waited for her to do the same. (Y/n) glanced down at Slash before begrudgingly summoning her (S/c) soul in front of her. The glow was dull once again, the crack and damage clearly apparent. Nothing had changed. But when Dream pushed his soul towards hers, hers retreated into her chest. A frustrated sigh left his teeth as he returned his gaze to hers. "You do not trust me."

She scowled. "You could kill me, Dream."

"I promised I would never hurt you."

"I know better than to accept that at face value." He cocked his head in confusion. She rolled her eyes, the frustration making her movements become quick and janky as she returned her attention to Slash's injuries. "You're a demon, Dream. A Demon King. Of every single demon in this house, you are the biggest threat to me—and what happened with Nightmare just helped remind me of that." Her initial distrust towards him returned, reinforced by seeing his pure white soul. He tried to kill Nightmare even though it was against his moral code, so his high horse was nothing more than a show pony designed to convince her that he was a good demon.
