Chapter 78
Sunday December 17th
Harry's POV
"I was really hoping Ezra was lying when he said I was on your service today" Mason commented as he approached.
"Yeah I was hoping the system was lying too" I scoffed in response, appearing as happy about this as he was. It's obvious that above all else, Mason still has this stronger dislike towards me ever since Mallory was in surgery. I've been trying my best to pretend I don't notice him glaring at me across the room and I even asked him for help at yesterday's event, because I'm trying to keep Mallory happy. They've been close for a while, and now she's even living in the guys house, so I was trying to keep my personal distaste for him at bay. I didn't want her to know about our gallery room scuffle and I'm sure he didn't either.
Although he makes it really difficult at times.
"Maybe I'll get my surgery" Mason remarked as he grabbed an Ipad off the shelf, typing in his credentials without looking at me.
"Don't hold your breath" I rolled my eyes, already annoyed with him. "How is Mallory?"
That's when he spared a glance in my direction.
"Ask her yourself"
I rolled my eyes yet again, it was just a question, one that he could easily answer as he's the person spending the most time with her right now. I didn't get to talk to Mal as much as I would have wanted yesterday, because Bonnie unexpectedly showed up to the party. I had no idea that she was going to make an appearance, otherwise I would have warned Mallory or something before she showed up here. I truly did feel bad that Mal had to see that, and I know it's my fault that we were in an uncomfortable position, but it was complicated.
A small part of me was happy that Stevie had her mom there. She spent both Halloween and Thanksgiving wondering if her mom was going to show up, and was disappointed when she didn't, so it was relieving to see the bright smile on her face when she did. Stevie couldn't stop raving to me that night about how excited she was that Bonnie got to see her meet Santa and drink hot chocolate with her. It made Stevie happy and that was the most important thing to me, but selfishly I wanted to be spending more of my time with Mal.
"Fine, I will" I pulled out my phone and clicked on the messages app, seeing Mallory's name at the top. We briefly messaged last night when I asked her for Mason's address, setting up a plan for this ridiculous award dinner tonight. I was still irritated that the Chief was insisting I attend, but I was at least relieved when Mallory agreed to go with me. Of course I should have known better, but Mallory thought it was the absolute coolest thing in the entire world, scolding me for not being more excited about it. I disagreed, However I let her have her fun. This marks her first time having her name on a project so important, and with all she's been through recently, I figured she needs something to brighten her spirits. If forcing myself through this dinner would do that for her, then I was going to suffer in silence.
To: Dr. Monroe
Doing okay? Can't wait to see you tonight.
The screen turned to black as I looked back over at Mason, deciding to tell him since I was unsure whether or not Mal has had the chance to.
"I'm picking Mallory up at 5:30" I stated. It was going to be the easiest way and it made the most sense. Mallory doesn't have a vehicle of her own to drive and it would be silly for Mason to drive all the way out to the restaurant to drive and pick her up, when I can do it myself. It was also a way to ensure we had some time alone before I was subjected to conversation, plus I had time to do so. Max and Lola were excited to spend the evening with Vie, keeping her entertained while I'm gone, and making sure she gets to sleep at a decent time.
