Chapter 83
Monday December 25th
Harry's POV
"W-what is this?" I stumbled over my words, my hands shaking as I held Mallory's necklace within it. Every part of me knew, it was obvious what this is, isn't it? But I still had to ask the question. I had to buy myself time, I had to try and collect my thoughts, I had to do something. Anything than believe this is reality right now.
"You tell me Harry" Bonnie spoke but I couldn't look at her, I refused to look up from the jewelry and see the look in her eyes, imagining it was enough. Her tone was short and pointed and the world was screaming at me that she knew exactly what has been going on. For how long? I couldn't be sure and that was the least of my worries right now. "I think you know exactly what it is"
"Bonnie..." I sighed out her name heavily. All of the guilt that I've been harboring for several months rushed to the shore. This entire time I've been behind the curtains with Mallory, I've known that it was wrong. Every part of my body knew that I was being dishonest to my marriage and the vows that I said, but no matter how hard I tried, I could never stop myself from chasing her. Mallory was intoxicating and she's everything that I've wanted, so I continued to let myself make bad decision after bad decision, and in result I swallowed down the actions that were bound to catch up with me eventually.
I guess they finally have.
"It's true, isn't it?" Bonnie asked as I stayed frozen in shock, fear, guilt, all of it. I know that it's cowardly I can't even look her in the eyes, but how could I? Bonnie and I have had the most complicated dynamic for several years now, but it wasn't until Mallory that I've risked it all. I never planned on taking that step but I did and I've betrayed everything I stood behind for years as it crumbled.
"I-..." I was at a loss of words. I didn't know how to respond to her. For months Mallory and I have had to be quick on our feet and come up with excuses and stories to explain things. In a moment's notice, I could get us out of anything. When it came to Max, Lola, or whoever else I could blurt out some excuse or performance to save us, but I couldn't do that this time. There's no way to get us out of this one, not when it comes to Bonnie.
"You can't even look at me" Bonnie stated, a chill running through the room. Goosebumps made themselves evident on my arms and I was still gripping onto the necklace like my life depended on it. Her voice, every syllable echoed with disappointment. She was right, I can't look at her. I'm selfish and trying to buy myself time from seeing the consequences of my actions. "That's not fair"
"I-I can explain..." I forced out the classic line, the one everyone results to when they know they've done something wrong. They try to save it with pitiful excuses and explanations, when the reality is, they've done something unforgiveable.
"Then explain" I heard her sniffle from across the room, composing herself before she spoke again. The few seconds she was silent were some of the longest of my life, a deafening quiet that had the ability to pierce my ears. "Because right now you're not saying anything"
I heard a clammer of Stevie's toys from down the hall, it sounds like she bumped into something and it knocked over. My head finally moved, gazing down the hall in concern for Vie, the light shining from her open door.
"I'm okay!" Stevie called from her room with a short giggle. It was comforting to know that she didn't get hurt or anything, but has she heard any of this? We haven't said anything that incriminating that I think Stevie would understand, but the interruption was a blaring reminder that she was here right now, not that far away from us.
"Okay baby!" I spoke up higher than a mumble for the first time to call back to her, letting her be aware that I heard and cared to make sure she was fine. Settling that, I went to look back down, but my sights crossed with Bonnie's on the way.
