Chapter 79
Wednesday December 20th
Mallory's POV
Twenty Seven.
If you asked me twelve days ago if I was going to make it to this day, I probably would have shaken my head no as I clung to the parts of me that tried to escape.
It was a daunting thought that ran through my brain those final moments in the alley before I passed out.
While I was desperately trying to make it to the exit, it was a fear of mine that I would forever be twenty six.
As my body gave out from underneath me and I became glued to the cement, I realized that my last birthday could have truly been my final.
And as my eyes slowly began to shut, I hated that each year a day spent mourning would fall so close to a day meant for celebrating.
I thought that my fate was sealed and my last breaths would be taken alone, cold, and in so much pain. I convinced myself that this was the end and that I was dying, but it was a bit confusing because I didn't have the life flashing before my eyes moment that everybody always speaks about.
At least that time.
That came later.
Later on I saw the playback of my life, the one that people refer to. In flashes I saw images of my favorite people and the treasured moments that I've spent with them. I saw the day that I met Veronica and the day I found out she was pregnant. Memories of growing up with Noah and holding Leo and Otis for the first time. Graduating medical school and the ones that cheered the loudest for me. The ice cream date that Mason and I finally got to have the first night at his apartment. Stevie and Harry sitting on the bed while we made sun drawings together to stick on her hospital room ceiling.
When that happened, then I really felt there was no coming back from my death. Every second, every clip, was one moment closer to crossing that final line and I was right there on the edge.
I fought it as hard as I could.
My feet kept creeping closer to the light that blinded me, and I clung and pushed against it as much as I could. There was nothing to hold onto, and I resisted the urge that kept forcing me closer, planting my feet on the floor and trying not to stumble.
However it was heavy.
It was incredibly heavy.
Despite my efforts, I found myself wavering on the line of life or death way too close for comfort. Teetering over the edge, I was scared. I felt I had done everything I could to not cross over and it still wasn't enough. I battled with the idea that I was letting myself and everyone else down, not ready to accept that should I fall over.
But then something yanked me back.
Right when I truly thought I was a goner, all of the memories and lights stopped. A person, fate, a medical miracle, I didn't know it at the time but something brought me back to stability.
I learned later on that maybe it was a combination of all three.
"Okay remember when I said I'm not that kind of roommate?" Mason asked me, joining at the tableside where I was currently sitting. I looked up from the book that I was reading and locked eyes with the two plates that he was holding, the delicious scent of pancakes overtaking my nostrils. As he reached down to slide one full meal in front of me, he added. "Well I guess I am today because it's your birthday!"
