Just In Time Part 23

Jay parked up in the car park, and walked into Gino's. He was wearing a pair of black jean shorts and a white star wars t-shirt and a pair of ray bans and a pair of vans. He walked over and sat in a booth. He looked at the menu as he waited for Racquel.

A few minutes later, the waitress walked over "can I get you a drink?" she asked "uh sure, can I get a cappuccino and also an iced coffee with almond milk with a dash of vanilla" he said. The waitress nodded and wrote the order down "sure I'll get that now. Are you getting food today?" she asked "yeah I'm just waiting for my other half to get here" he smiled. The waitress nodded and walked away to get the drinks.

Jay scrolled on his phone, he then saw Racquel walk in wearing a smart floral dress and jacket, with matching bag and shoes. She walked over as he stood up. "Hey baby" she smiled. He kissed her softly "hi beautiful" he said. The waitress walked over and placed their drinks on the table. They thanked her and she walked away, "thanks for getting me a drink" she smiled "your welcome" he smiled and took her hand. Jay asked her about her morning and what she had been up to.

Five minutes later. The waitress walked back over "you guys ready to order food" she asked.
"Yeah can I get the egg Benedict with avocado" Racquel asked "I'll get the same please" he said with a smile. The waitress smiled nodded and took the menus away. Racquel and Jay were speaking to one another when he heard aale voice say his name. He looked up and saw a tall brunette man "thom? Hiya mate" he smiled and gave him a hug. The brunette man returned the hug. "How you doing pal?!" Jay said. "I'm really good mate. What are you doing here? I thought you were still playing for Glasgow?" he said "no I played my final season in New York. Now I'm retired. Getting too old and too tired of the injuries. Moved to La to be with my other half. Thom this is Racquel. Babe this is one of my oldest rugby lads Thom." he said. They shook hands, "it's nice to meet you Racquel" he said "you too" she smiled politely. He looked back at Jay "listen mate I better get going but I am working with Rugby USA at the moment they are based in California. They are looking for an assistant coach. I'm sure they'd be happy for you to come down and show them what you can do" he said. Jay nodded and smiled in disbelief "Thanks mate appreciated yeah I definitely will" he said and hugged Thom one last time before sitting down. "That sounds promising" Racquel said with a smile. Jay smiled "yeah definitely. I'll give him a call when I get back home" he said, before kissing her hand.
The waitress then came over with their food. They both thanked her and declined any sauces.

They finished their food. Jay paid to Racquels dismay, they got up and walked out in hand in hand. Jay walked Racquel to her car, he kissed her softly "see you later. I love you" he said before kissing her softly. "Bye hunny. I love you too" she said before opening her car, getting in and driving to her next meeting. Jay walked over to the car park, got in his car and drove home. He opened the door and walked into the house. He found Thoms number and gave him a call.

"Hello?" Thom said. "Hey mate it's Jay. Now a good time?" he asked "Yes its a great time. So as I was saying in the cafe. I'm working behind the scenes with Rugby USA, they are a really promising team, they've got loads of talent. I've spoken the head coach and he's excited to meet you. They are training this afternoon around 1ish if you'd be interested in coming down, come in like tracksuit bottoms and a top as I think the coach may want to do some coaching stuff with you and the team" Thom asked. Jay smiled "yeah definitely mate. Let me know where the ground is and I'll be there" he said. "Amazing news mate. Yeah I'll drop you a pin, see you later" Thom said. They said goodbye before they hung up. His phone pinged, it was the location of the ground. He saw it was only half an hour away. He put away his phone and then turned the TV on.

Jay knew of the USA team. Whilst playing for Scotland he had played a few friendlies against them and he knew a few of they players as they played for his old team in New York.

1pm.

Jay drove into the car park. He saw Thom waiting for him. He got out of the car in a pair of shorts and a vest and a pair of trainers. He walked over to him. Thom greeted him with a handshake. "Cmon follow me and I'll show you to the coach and team" he said. Jay nodded and followed Thom to the ground.

They walked over onto the pitch, to a bald man. "Hey Scott" Thom said, he turned around and smiled and greeted him "hey man" Scott smiled "this is Jay, the guy I was telling you about" Thom said "I know who Jay Wise is" he smiled and shocked Jay's hand "it's a pleasure man we're thrilled to have you here. What brings you to California?" he said "Retirement and the sun. Aswell as I'm dating a Cali girl" he said "they are the best ones... Let me introduce you to the team. Thought we could do some drills together and then you could do some on your own if you're alright with that?" he asked. Jay nodded "yeah lets do it" he said.

"Guys let's huddle up around me" he said. The team came in together "this is Jay. He's looking to be our assistant coach. He has years of experience playing international and high club rugby. He's an ex Scotland international. So please make him feel welcome. Do you want to say a few words?" Scott asked "uh yeah sure. I'm honoured to be here with you guys today. I've seen you play before and I know some of you from back in New York and I've played against a few of you when I was playing for Scotland. I'm here to learn today about what you do and hopefully I'll be seeing you guys again really soon after today. Let's have a good session!" he said. The team cheered and they ran to the field to start practise.
