Another day of Nabi watching a film on her couch while ignoring her phone to avoid talking to Jeno, Sounds like a healthy relationship doesn't it? She couldn't wait for the vacation to end finally. being busy would come in handy in this situation.
As the hours waned on, Nabi found herself mindlessly flipping through channels, her attention barely tethered to the nonsensical plot unfolding before her but the doorbell soon interrupted her boredom. Startled, Nabi paused the film and walked towards the door, her curiosity piqued by the unexpected visitor. She swung the door open, only to be met with a sight that sent a jolt of concern coursing through her veins, crying Soojin.
"What happened?" She asked with widened eyes already feeling anxious at the sight.
"N-Nabi" The older girl managed to let out between her sniffles before she started sobbing again, Without a moment's hesitation, Nabi enveloped the girl in a comforting embrace, "Shh, it's okay," she murmured soothingly, her fingers tracing gentle circles across Soojin's trembling back. "Let's go inside, okay?"
The crying woman nodded before they both entered Nabi's living room and sat on the couch. Soojin continued to sniffle for a minute before she calmed down a little bit. Noticing this, Nabi finally decided to say something.
"Do you want to talk about what happened?"
"Seonghwa and I had a huge fight..." Soojin started, her voice shaking while her eyes became teary again. Nabi's eyes widened, her mouth opening in shock. Seonghwa and Soojin were a couple who never fought—maybe only rarely about unimportant things, but never this seriously. It was the first time seeing her best friend cry because of the man, because if anything, she always claimed how he made her the happiest.
"W-why? What happened?" Nabi finally managed to ask.
"Nabi, you won't believe this..." Soojin sobbed, burning Nabi's heart. Soojin was not the crying type, so seeing her in this condition was really saddening. "I believed I was pregnant with my whole heart. We even started coming up with names," she added between sniffles, "only to find out it was all a mere joke."
"What? Soojin, what do you mean?" Nabi asked, her eyebrows furrowing.
"I visited my gynecologist and it turned out, not only am I not pregnant right now, but I can never be."
Nabi felt her heart sink, her mind racing to comprehend the weight of Soojin's words. She tightened her hold on her friend, her own eyes filling with tears of empathy.
"Soojin, I'm so sorry..." she whispered, her voice breaking. "I can't even imagine how hard this is for you." Soojin buried her face in Nabi's shoulder, her sobs becoming louder. "Seonghwa... he was so excited, Nabi. We both were. I can't believe it was all a lie oh my god..." Nabi held her tighter, feeling helpless but determined to be there for her friend. "It's not fair Nabi..." The crying woman continued, "It's really not fair, I've spent my whole life helping other women get pregnant, delivering their babies, seeing the joy on their faces... And now, I find out that I can never have that. It's like the universe is making fun of me."
Nabi's heart broke further if that was even possible. She couldn't fathom the depth of Soojin's pain, the cruel irony of her profession versus her reality. "Oh, Soojin..." she whispered, her own tears falling freely now.
Soojin's sobs grew louder, her body shaking with the force of her anguish. "I feel like I'm breaking, Nabi. I don't know what to do after this. what to tell Seonghwa... I was so sure it was my turn this time... I thought... we thought.."
"Soojin listen to me okay?" Nabi said as she pulled away from the hug, holding the sobbing woman's shoulder gently, the girl looked so fragile, so weak that it felt like if Nabi would let go, she would fall down and crush into a million pieces. "You're not alone, Soojin. I'm here for you. Seonghwa is also there for you, We'll all figure this out together-"
"You don't understand Nabi, I can't do this to him."
"What are you talking about?"
"Seonghwa was the happiest to have a kid, he was so excited so ready... I can't take that away from him..." Soojin looked down at her lap, staring at her shaking hands while remembering how broken her husband looked when he heard the news about her. "Unfortunately I can't do anything to... to prevent this. But he can," She added with a shaky voice.
"Stop saying nonsense! how can you even think of things like that Soojin? You're not thinking straight right now!" Nabi exclaimed, shaking her head.
"No, I made up my mind-"
"No, you didn't! He loves you the most Soojin you can't do this to him!"
"I DON'T WANT THIS EITHER BUT I'M DOING HIM A FAVOR" Soojin's voice raised, her emotions all over the place.
"That is not doing him a favor Soojin, if anything that will break him ever more."
"Well too late, I already told him this and that's why we fought..." Nabi's heart sank further, feeling the weight of Soojin's words. "Soojin, what exactly did you tell him?"
Soojin's tears streamed down her face as she looked up, her eyes filled with despair. "I told him... I told him he should leave me. That he deserves someone who can give him the family he dreams of. That I can't... I can't bear to see him disappointed every day because of me."
