Nabi was immersed in work the whole week, doing way more than she did during the entire month combined. But the Sunday eventually came and just like that her winter holidays started. Usually, The girl loved nothing more than resting but now with so much in her mind, she preferred being occupied with work. Furthermore, while she was occupied with work, she could cite it as a valid excuse for being unable to spend time with San.
After much thinking, the girl decided to stop thinking about her neighbor and instead enjoy her free time. Nabi had nothing to do, no one to talk to, and no place to be, she could just chill on her couch the whole day doing absolutely nothing and while that may sound boring to some people, the girl enjoyed doing that a little too much.
She made caramel popcorn putting it into a big bowl, grabbed the warmest blanket, and took her favorite place on the couch. grabbing the remote, she smiled while searching for a movie to watch, however, her smile faded as soon as the TV suddenly shut off, plunging the room into an eerie silence.
Confusion clouded Nabi's mind as she frantically pressed buttons on the remote, hoping to resurrect the lifeless screen. The girl stared at the screen waiting for it to say 'Ha! gotcha' and turn back on, but to her dismay, the television remained obstinately dark.
"Are you kidding me..." groaning out loud out of annoyance the girl grabbed her phone and subconsciously dialed her neighbor's number. It took a few rings before she remembered she should've been avoiding him and her eyes widened but before she could hang up he answered.
"Hello," Instead of answering Nabi panicked and quickly hung up the phone. "Nabi, are you serious?" she muttered to herself, kicking her feet aimlessly in the air.
Her momentary panic was abruptly interrupted by the insistent chime of the doorbell. It had to be San, she thought, feeling a blush creeping up her cheeks from embarrassment. Dragging her feet, she approached the door and pulled it open.
"Are you okay?" San's voice held genuine concern, etched plainly on his features. Nabi fought the urge to roll her eyes, San was always a bit of a drama queen.
"I called you by accident..." she mumbled, her gaze flitting away.
"You could've just said that instead of hanging up you know," he replied, a hint of amusement tugging at his lips.
"I thought you'd figure it out on your own but well," she muttered, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.
"Whatever," San shrugged, holding out a bundle of candles. "I brought you these."
"Huh?" Nabi blinked in confusion.
"The power's out, haven't you noticed?" San asked, tilting his head.
"Oh! I thought my TV broke. Thank goodness!" Nabi exclaimed, relief flooding her before she realized what her neighbor just said, "WAIT WHAT?"
"Yeah, I called and found out something blew, so our building's without electricity today."
"Are you serious? What an awful timing," she groaned, frustration evident in her voice.
"We can hang out, so you won't be bored," San suggested with a smirk on. Yeah, that was the first thing Nabi wanted right now! Note the sarcasm. "Actually, I have other plans," Nabi replied, hesitating slightly.
"Like what?" San pressed.
"Umm," The girl took her time thinking, only to come up with the worst response she could've given, "Chores?" she offered weakly.
"In the dark? The sun's already setting," he pointed out.
"I have excellent night vision, they call me a cat for a reason!" she retorted with a smirk. A cat? Really? Nabi couldn't wait for San to leave so that she would get a chance to bang her head on the wall for being so dumb today.
"Um... And who exactly calls you that?" San raised an eyebrow skeptically.
No one, really. "My friends..." Nabi trailed off, the excuse sounding flimsier by the second.
"Mhm," San hummed noncommittally. "Nabi, why do I get the feeling that you've been avoiding me lately?"
"oh, am I?" Nabi feigned innocence, inwardly cursing her own evasiveness.
"You are," San insisted, his gaze steady.
"I'm not though. I don't know what you're talking about!" Nabi protested a little too quickly.
"Is it because I kissed you?" San's question hung heavy in the air. Why did he have to be so straightforward all the time? jeez.
"San, you're being delusional," Nabi shot back, her tone sharp.
"Delusional?" the man scoffed, "I don't think so."
"Well, I do."
"I already apologized. If there's something else—" San's voice trailed off, his frustration palpable.
"There's nothing," Nabi replied curtly, each word driving a deeper wedge between them.
"So how long are you planning on acting like this?" San's voice cut through the tension, his frustration visible.
"Like what exactly?!" Nabi shot back, her own irritation bubbling to the surface.
"Like we're strangers," San replied, his tone tinged with hurt.
"Well, I don't have to act like anything, San. We are strangers," Nabi retorted sharply. "How long have we known each other for? A couple of months? And half of that time you spent being a dick to me, so yeah, I don't really have to act."
Nabi knew she was being unfair, but the words spilled out before she could stop them. As she noticed the hurt and disappointment etched on San's face, a pang of guilt shot through her.
"I didn't realize that's how you felt," San said quietly, his expression guarded. "But I understand now. Sorry for bothering you," he stated, his voice tinged with anger as he turned abruptly and hurriedly left.
Nabi stood there, watching him go, feeling a mixture of regret and frustration swirling inside her. She knew she had pushed him away with her sharp words, yet she couldn't shake the feeling that she was justified in her actions.
Entering the living room, the girl immediately grabbed her phone, this time dialing another number.
"Hello?"
"Soojin, I think I fucked up."
