A/N: You know, it's about time I've tried writing Mercury and Venus angst. I specialize in that sort of stuff, and I know you guys love seeing everybody suffer!
Starts out as angst but slowly turns to... fluff? I mean, not really. Mercury and Venus don't exactly become friends at the end of this, but they do gain a mutual respect for each other. Mercury does sort of forgive him.
It takes a long time to have a healthy friendship with someone who's a violent bully (throwing an asteroid at someone over a joke is NOT a normal reaction, guys!) Maybe one day I'll write a follow-up where their relationship gradually improves :]
- Written in Mercury's POV. Mercury is a mostly reliable narrator, but some of his thoughts about Venus are in a negative light. This isn't me bashing Venus, but if you were bullied by someone, you wouldn't have happy thoughts about them!
- NO SPECIFIC TIMELINE CANONICALLY. THIS DOESN'T TAKE PLACE DURING A SPECIFIC ARC OR EPISODE (but the "Venus gets a Makeover" episodes are mentioned here, so it's after that)
- For Venus x Mercury shippers: I can see it working out if they actually improved things, but this isn't supposed to be a ship oneshot. I respect the ship, though.
- There are larger sized earthling objects in space, such as mirrors because those are brought up later. Canon Solarballs literally has card games and planets being able to paint so I think I have a pass.
CONTENT WARNING:
- Violent ways of dealing with extreme emotions (ex. destroying things, yelling at others and getting into fights with others.)update 8/28/24: this chapter was scheduled, by the way! A lot of my chapters are scheduled.. this one in particular was written six months back. So, mischaracterization is possible.
—Mercury didn't think Venus really liked him all that much. No, that was an understatement. Venus probably hated him. The following week, when Mercury next had occasion to come across Venus, it seemed that the other planet's mood had only worsened. Mercury had been hoping that the "goddess of beauty" incident was just a symptom of a particularly bad day, but Venus was still in a truly foul mood come their following encounters.
As Mercury was delivering his usual messages to others, he found himself watching Venus out of the corner of his eye. He was at a noticeable distance from the other planets, staring pointedly at the ground with a scowl affixed to his face. Venus' fists were clenched and he repeatedly kicked small tiny fragments of asteroids out of his path, which Mercury knew as a surefire sign he was particularly angry or upset about something.
Mercury's mind slowly drifted to their last conversation.
—
"Because you've said it yourself!" Mercury shouted, his throat constricting in on itself. They'd been fighting for hours, all over Venus' usual stupid temper tantrums. Mercury was always the victim, all cause of what? Because he was the smallest planet? "I heard you talking about it with Earth and Mars! You admitted it, you can't have life. There, I said it for you. Maybe then you'd actually try being NICE to me!"
Something seemed to die in Venus' face. The anger was overshadowed by a dark and pained expression that reminded Mercury of the look on Earth's face whenever someone mentioned the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.
The hand on his throat went slack, releasing some of the pressure on his breathing. He went to step forward, but Mercury roughly pushed Mercury back up against a nearby asteroid so hard that his head smacked roughly into the rocks and spun stars into his vision.
