A/N: LOWKEY kinda terrified to post this chapter but it's pretty fun to write so... here you go.
STORY OUTLINE: After the events of "What if the Planets Were Ordered by Size Part 2", Mercury roasts the living shit out of Venus and gives him a taste of his own medicine.
TIMELINE: Right after "What if the Planets Were Ordered by Size Part 2" | canon divergence
PERSPECTIVE: Third Person | Venus' POV
SHIPS: NONE - Vercury shippers, I FW Vercury but if you like this ship a lot, this is not the chapter for you.
THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS:
- Sassy Mercury
- Venus getting yelled atAUTHORS NOTE: This chapter isn't me villainizing one character or the other, but me applying canon content and relationships from the show to this chapter. Realistically, if this were to happen, of course. Don't defend a character just cause they're your favorite, think about their flaws too. I don't write any character to be in the right, I wrote them to have realistic interactions. Keep that in mind.
Also, one of my friends reading this chapter said Mercury was the "embodiment of feminine rage", and I think that's pretty neat.

Venus stood alone in his orbit, the distant chatter of other planets and moons being muted by his own thoughts. He was so close to possibly having life, but he gave it up. He wanted life more than anything, but he gave it up anyways. He always wondered what it'd be like to be Earth for just one day, but thoughts like that were hopeless.
Venus had watched on the sidelines as Earth got everything he ever wanted. And god damn it, he felt guilty for the hatred he felt. He didn't hate Earth, really, he just.. hated the fact that he had what he didn't. He hated feeling this way towards his friend, knowing it wasn't fair, yet couldn't help the longing that crept into his heart from Earth's joy.
Just then, Venus heard footsteps approaching. He looked up to see Mercury, his expression gentle and sweet. What was this about?
"Venus..." Mercury began softly, his voice oddly kind. Venus managed a weak smile, confused on why Mercury was suddenly acting nice all of a sudden. It quickly faded as he saw Mercury's expression harden, his eyes narrowing into slits. A cold shiver ran down Venus' spine, a bolt of confusion and dread striking through his chest.
"Congratulations," Mercury spoke, his tone dripping with sarcasm and barely contained fury. He took in a few deep breaths, as if he was holding back some less than desirable comments.
Venus' mouth went dry, and he opened it to speak, but no words came out. He could feel the weight of Mercury's anger pressing down on him. It was suffocating, and Venus didn't even know why he was being confronted like this. He already gave up his chance to sustain life, if that was what he was so mad about.
"You have invented a new kind of stupid," Mercury continued, his voice now edged with a sharp bitterness that Venus had never heard before and never wanted to hear again, "A 'damage you can never undo' kind of stupid. An 'open all the cages in the zoo' kind of stupid. 'Truly, you didn't think this through' kind of stupid."
Venus met Mercury's piercing gaze as the other started pacing around him, his footsteps increasingly getting more intense and Venus swore Mercury would've left marks in the non-existent ground. Mercury came to a stop in front of Venus. "Let's review: the Sun gave us new orbits, that's cool. You're in the Goldilocks Zone, wow, awesome! But instead of thinking of everybody else's comfort, you only thought of yourself! You didn't think of your friend, who already harbors billions of living creatures on his surface, you didn't think of me or Mars while we were getting pelted with solar flares, you only thought of what you could've had, and you would never have been able to sustain life anyways. So yeah, congratulations!"
"Mercury—"
"You know why Earth can do what he wants?" Mercury interrupted, his voice rising dangerously. Venus' brow furrowed at the mention of Earth. What did he have to do with this? "Because he doesn't dignify schoolyard taunts with a response!"
Venus could've only chalked that up to the 'goddess of beauty' nickname. He didn't mean to have Astrodude stranded on his surface or to have knocked Mercury out with an asteroid. "I didn't mean for any of that to fucking happen—"
"This isn't ABOUT YOU, you piece of shit!" Mercury shouted, and Venus practically flinched. He stared down at Mercury in shock. "You're always so afraid of what others will do to you, yet you're the only person you ever seem to lose to," Mercury said, lowering his voice to a harsh whisper.
Venus felt anger churn in his gut. "When have I ever—"
"You have no right to say that when you've intentionally, willingly— I might add— bullied me for years. But when your friends make a simple joke about you, you endanger other lives because you never learned to control yourself!" Mercury hissed. From how pissed off Mercury seemed, Venus was more surprised an asteroid hadn't been chucked at his face yet. "You're so caught up in your mindset that you'll never be happy again that you never tried to be happy again! And then you wonder why hardly anyone wants to be your friend!"
"Mercury—" Venus began, trying to explain himself. If Mercury would just listen to him, he could tell him why he did those things. He didn't mean to hurt anyone, he just wanted to let off some steam. Everyone seemed so infuriatingly indifferent to his emotions, and every teasing comment sent him off the edge.
The smaller planet snorted, "Do you really care about Earth, or do you only care because he reminds you of your past?" he inquired.
Venus froze. Did he? He had grown to care about Earth because Earth had what he had, and he didn't want to see Earth lose that, but overtime he didn't see Earth just for that. He was an annoying, cunning little prick, for sure, but he never wanted to see him die. He wasn't sure if he could live with the idea of Earth dying while he was still around. "Earth—"
"—is the best thing for his Earthlings' lives. Every sacrifice he made was for their life. Never lose sight of that," Mercury spoke, his tone calming down once more, but Venus could tell he was still angry. Mercury let out a loud, heavy sigh. "For the rest of your life, make sure his Earthlings have the best life."
(A/N: Mercury is saying this because Earth has told him about the struggle he faces with his Earthlings, he knows, Venus does not. Mercury is telling him because he really wants to remind Venus that he won't have life, he needs to stop lingering on it and heal.)
"Mercury, wait—"
"Congratulations." Mercury spat with strong distaste, whirling away from Venus. Venus stared at Mercury, processing everything he had just said to him. As the other left, Venus was only accompanied by his racing thoughts and better judgement.

I feel like a lot of people forget that Mercury is a grown planet and can fend for himself.
