A/N: These two being friends is really underrated. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the dynamic between Earth and Luna, but I also wanted to focus on Luna and Mars as well.
The Dark Side of the Moon's here, too! I imagine that the effects of having a different side of you encouraging you to crash into your planet and best friend and hurting others would be pretty bad, so I put it to use here! They might be a bit out of character, I had to rewatch several Solarballs episodes to get a grasp of Luna's dark side.
I hope I don't make Luna seem useless, he's a very strong and independent character! It's just that he's the center of the angst here, so those qualities might not shine through as they normally would. Please forgive me for that part.
CONTENT WARNING:
- DETAILED descriptions of PANIC ATTACKS in the person's perspective.SHIPS: none explicitly written. I'd prefer if you didn't see this as a Luna x Mars chapter, moon x planet ships make me REALLY uncomfortable.
PERSPECTIVE: Luna's POV
TIMELINE: After Moon Revolution
—Luna really hadn't planned on doing much. Earth was in a more docile state after an intense game of cards, and the others were doing their own things. He didn't have much to do other than orbiting Earth, so he occasionally took his time humming a tune that had been stuck in his head.
His mind floated back to The Moon Revolution. He'd always been at Earth's side, yes, but the mere thought of his closest friend, sibling, and planet possibly dying was something he couldn't stand. He normally was able to keep it out of his mind, after all, he managed to make amends with Titan and managed to work things out with the other moons. Earth seemed to be improving, which was a good thing.
Moving to float on his back, he watched as Earth observed the stars, a fond smile playing at his lips. There were times where Earth would spend hours staring at the stars, trying to snuff out the constellations. They used to do that a lot. Luna was always close to Earth, but there were times where his presence seemed like a burden. Out of everything, the only things that upset him the most was being called Earth's Moon, as if he were some sort of possession. He wasn't recognized for his features, his abilities, nothing. Just some sort of item of Earth.
He'd gotten so upset that he let the Dark Side of the Moon take control. Willingly, too. He scared the living daylights out of Titan and the moons of Mars. But he hadn't felt that way in awhile, he could control himself. He felt the rhythmic thumping of his core as he thought about the last time he lost control of himself. His actions, his thoughts, his emotions. It was mortifying.
He always wanted to be seen as his own person, so to have that all stripped away from him? It was his worst fear.
Luna could hear Earth saying something as he looked at the constellations, but all Luna could focus on was the fear spreading throughout his body. He was aware of the way his heart had begun thumping viciously against his ribcage and the way his hands were becoming clammy. Luna went to take a deep breath, but something stopped him- a closing feeling like a fist wrapping around his throat. Perhaps it was more like a noose. A vicious ache began to form around his hammering heart, and a wave of fear struck him numb. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. For a few moments, Luna just sat in the silence as his body screamed for air, as every warning sounded in his brain. This was what losing all control was. It had to be. He wasn't his own person.
The pain in his chest was searing and weighty. It stayed heavy in the center, right where his heart beat quickly. He brought a tingling, shaking hand up to clutch at it as he attempted to swallow against the dry, thick feeling in his throat. He finally managed a deep breath, but it just sent more pain soaring through his chest.
