Theia had become his guardian angel in the afterlife, a role she embraced with fierce determination. She watched over him with unwavering love, guiding him through life's perils and whispering warnings in his ear. But each time she saved him, a piece of her soul dimmed, a sacrifice she made willingly.
Earth was playing a game of Asteroid Dodgeball, and he had specifically wanted to make things just a little more dangerous for the thrill. Theia hovered beside him, her translucent form shimmering with an otherworldly light. She could sense the danger ahead, the change of gravity with a smaller asteroid that would send him spiraling out of control.
She reached out, her hand brushing against his. Instantly, he felt a strange compulsion to slow down, to steer clear of the danger. He obeyed, his trust in that unseen force unwavering. But as the asteroid safely flew past him, Theia felt a part of her soul wither and fade. She still had a little more time.
And time took its toll. She'd grown accustomed to not seeing many others around. Everyone was alive. They all had something to live for. She felt it. Endless hopes, dreams, and motivations for billions of years. They had so much to experience, and they'd only seen a fraction of what they could have. She sorely missed how that felt.
She remembered the burning fury that filled her entire body when she saw Earth get struck with an asteroid all those millions of years ago. She dropped to her knees beside him and screamed. She didn't even know if it was out of rage, anguish, or both. She would've lit every star ablaze, rip apart whatever gravity made a black hole, shred every planet and moon if it meant her love still had a chance.
And one day, Earth was unfocused and sleeping in his orbit, and an asteroid was going to hit him. It would've destroyed everything he had worked so hard for. And Theia couldn't let that happen. She knew she was weaker than she had been millions of years before. She hardly had enough energy to keep herself afloat. But only one thing mattered to her. And she wasn't going to let that die.
Theia forced herself to fly in front of Earth, taking the hit for him. Every cell in her body screamed in protest, but she didn't care. She skidded to a stop in front of him, and braced herself as the asteroid hit her instead.
Time stopped. There was no dramatic falling back, no loud panic around her. Nothing else stopped as the asteroid pierced through Theia. Only time. Theia let out a wounded sound as she clasped at the injury. Theia felt the void pillow her knees as she crumpled to the ground, vision blurring. It felt as if a fire had ripped through her, alighting her entire being in a flame of agony. She couldn't scream in horror or cry out in pain. Shock washed over her.
She remembered seeing smaller objects get pulled in by The Sun, or accidentally destroyed by the larger planets. Death gripped all of them in its unforgiving hands. Theia soon would fall victim to its hold, too. She knew that. She wasn't a fool.
Theia was always painfully aware that every time she risked her life for Earth, it could be the last time she could do that. She had accepted that as soon as she knew she had the choice.
Theia had stayed, though; she had nothing to move on to after all. Theia only wanted to become more than just the only female planet. She wanted to live a life for herself, and damn it- Theia had caught a glimpse of that life. The last couple of years with Earth had been the best Theia had ever had. She had never known a love like theirs. It was a hurricane of desperate emotions and fervid affection, but as most storms are, it was only fleeting. Theia needed something to keep her torn away from that terrible feeling of being left.
Searing blood leaked through her fingers. It was too much. Theia knew where the asteroid hit her. She knew there was no chance of coming back this time. She recognized the feeling all too well when she died the first time. She died when she found something to live for.
She wanted to live, so badly. She was so, so tantalizingly close to freedom. She was almost there. She was in love. She couldn't love this. She couldn't lose him.
Theia thought the worst part was that she was alone. Always and forever. The one person she wanted, the one person she loved, was never hers to have. Theia knew very well who Earth had, with his kind eyes and his gentle smile. Theia wanted to dislike him, but she couldn't. Theia wanted to be furious with Earth for even looking at his moon, but she couldn't.
She knew this was how things ended, that their whirlwind affair always ended in one of them leaving. Theia knew, though, it would have never been her to do it. Somehow, that had hurt worse than the asteroid buried in her chest that labored her breathing.
Theia knew she needed to fight harder for breath, but perhaps she could have also fought harder and not silently watched as Earth walked away from what they had. Theia could have expressed better how severely she had loved him. Perhaps Earth hadn't known. God, now he never would. Theia would do anything to see him one last time and tell him everything she had always been so ready to say. There was so much she didn't speak of. She should've said it. Why did she have to be so patient all the time? All of that seemed so silly now.
Theia fixed her sights on the shining stars through the canopy of small asteroids, rustling slightly with the warm air. They had loved nights like these. She could practically see Earth's smiling gaze, feel his loving touch, and hear his hushed voice as they snuck away together.
Theia realized faintly that she was scared. A part of Theia wished Earth were there as her breath continued to get shallower, the warmth from her body leaking away. She wished Earth were there to hold her hands and tell her she would be okay. She quickly chased away the wicked thought as tears pricked at her eyes. How selfish of her. Earth had gotten out. He would have a good life, a successful life, even if Theia didn't have a role in it. Earth didn't need her anymore, despite how much Theia needed him. Earth would be okay.
Death was nothing like the first time, but it didn't make it any less worse. At least the first time, it was over in seconds. Now, she felt piece by piece of her fade away. She couldn't tell if it was her mind, consciousness, and everything inside first that went, or whatever was left of her physical form. Even though she was fading, she felt no regret. She had saved him one last time and that was all that mattered.
Earth was safe. That could be enough. That had to be enough.
Theia's eyes fell closed as she sighed out the life she had barely gotten to live. Her last thought was of her love, and the heart that had beaten so fervently for Earth stilled forever.
